Holodecks: it's a start.

amazing stuff, this would have tied in well with one of my proposed thesis for 4d photo scanning, but I've dropped it, trying to merge optical flow data with automatic mesh generation from voxel carving is not easy in the least, add to that the computing power needed when a single frame of medium resolution can result in 51 million voxels, adding dynamic deformations to that mesh can get messy :)

Dude, that voxel carving can be a whipping -- I nearly sliced off my pinky whittling some voxels just last weekend.

Or,

What?

:)

:)

slicing a digit is not to bad these days, I think in most cases it can be re-attached (or so I'm led to believe, as patched together from a diet of mis-mash of films and TV Media)

Yeah, I have a question. What?!

Its pretty cool...but is it really a hologram if its projected on a physical object like that mirror? Shouldn't a hologram be an image suspended in air?

A "hologram" is any image able to be recorded/projected in 3D. They used to be only on flat film, but the term has been expanded well beyond that definition.

Looks straight out of star wars. That is so cool.

But what can it be used for? Would people fund the research (or buy it), which probably costs a lot, so that it can advance further, or will there be no use for it and it'll just wither away as a Sci-Fi fantasy?

It would be really cool to see this stuff everywhere.

But can't wait for the day when we can have holodecks. :)

I'm still waiting for my robots and flying cars that they promised.

I'd be happy with a 32GB P2 card.
:)

But wow, that thing was freaky cool.
Yeah, not exactly sure what practical purpose it serves yet...but it would be fun at parties.

We'll see it in the next Sharper Image catalog.

Hey Anhar, I'm curious - are you referring to time as your 4th dimension or are you referring to a spatial 4th dimension? This whole voxel carving thing sounds quite interesting (from Googling it).

Uh huh. So how close are we to technology like the embedded message Princess Leia sent via R2-D2? The faster you guys get that done, the faster you can get started on light sabres.

And dude, next time you're having your driver's license photo taken, (or mug shot...whatever your avatar is), bring a comb...or use some voxel carving to smooth it out in post.

Otherwise...good work. But seriously...How much would that little contraption in the video cost, and what are the odds of that mirror flying off?

Sure beats a Lava Lamp.

PS. This just came to mind, and maybe Anhar is most capable of answering it...What would the immediate practical application of something like this be? (other than just plain cool)

I can only think of novel uses.

Think about animated movies with the blocking done in 3D. Or theme park rides where you walk in between ghosts. Or filming your grandparents telling a story so you'd always have a freaky image to remember them by.

You guys are absolutely right about that stuff (even the holoporn), but that is more for the future. I was thinking of present day applications.

If it could be only used as a sort of modern day Lava Lamp, I think it would still be cool as hell (which, as I understand it, is actually quite hot...but you know what I mean.) There would have to be some sort of really safe housing, though, because that spinning mirror seems like a freak accident waiting to happen.

Something for Mythbusters to test in the future? (It has been on for the last 3 hours.)
