Hollywood movies are overexposed many times...

I have a little rant here about the way lighting is used:

Many of us talk about how independent filmakers often overexpose their pictures, but I've noticed MANY hollywood movies have ridiculously intense light pour into the frame; it almost looks like white paint.

Examples off the top of my head are King Kong, and the latest movie Dejavu with Denzel W.

I think if the movie comes from Hollywood, that's considered a "style." If it comes from an indie flick, it's considered incompetence. But then if you can make your $10k film looks like a $30 million Hollywood feature then you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Natural lighting isn't used nearly enough. Terrence Malick has set the standard I think for stunning use of natural light. Both the Thin Red Line and The New World are amazing.
