One more post for today. What do I need to know and what do I need to do in an audition situation? I have no experience at all. Any websites or pointers out there?? Please help.
Thanks
Tyler
It's really quite simple. Get a couple other people to help you stay organized. As the director, you should never be doing anything but focusing on the performances of the actors. You should have two people to help you: a cam op handling the camera and having actors slate, and a casting director dealing specifically with getting actors in, getting actors out, handing out sides, and if needed reading with the actors. You should be sitting, watching, and making mental notes. You can even have one more person there to take notes on the performances or marking who is good and who isn't, because you don't want to be writing during their performances.
You should always introduce yourself as the director, and the casting director should introduce herself, but other than that, no one else needs to really talk to them. And if an actor is bad, don't feel bad getting them out of there quickly. What you need to realize is that actors do this for a living - they go around to many auditions hoping to get a part. The idea is to not waste their time, if they're wasting yours. If you keep around an actor who isn't great for a second and third reading, it wastes your time and wastes theirs. So if they aren't going to get the part, politely thank them for their time and get them out.
