hockey idea -- deep 6 it?

i had a pretty great (imho) idea for a ice hockey comedy ... but then, doing a little research, i find out that the great paul newman hockey film slap slot is undergoing a remake, due out maybe 2012, with jim carrey maybe to star.

so, my question is ... should i push on to greener pastures; ie, would i be dooming myself in attempting a comedy on ice in the same neck of the woods as slap shot?

better to know now than ... later.

Go for it. As long as the overall premise isn't too similar. People usually hate the idea of remakes anyway so something original would probably garner more positive attention.

Could you maybe put your own unique twist on it, add a good subplot, or make the ice hockey story the subplot? I am thinking of the recent film The Love Guru, involved ice hockey subplot as a tool for the rest of the story, maybe think along that line? Just tossing ideas to use or lose.

well, at the very least, it's not a straight hockey story; more: a fish out of water story with the fish wearing skates. that said, it is front-and-center set in the hockey world but plotwise it's not like slap shot at all. hmmm.

Be sure to add in that always present romantic subplot =) And hey, if it has Jessica Alba in it as with Love Guru I will shell out a sawbuck for a ticket to see your movie!

Does it have to be a comedy ?? If this is how you work, fine.

I would suggest, maybe a serious sports drama with lots of hardcore in-yer-face hockey action (tiny cameras on players ?) in the vein of "Any Given Sunday" or "Raging Bull" even. Hockey violence would be a grabber for me. Up-close realism.

You might even make some new hockey fans down south.

sadly, i gravitate toward the goofy and this thing, if i go forward on it, would be decidedly goofy ... but with heart!
and a good bit of blood.
this is hockey, after all.
