The Hobbit was released in Blu-Ray 720p and because of 48 frames per second it now claims to be sharper than 1080p at 24 frames per second. So does this mean full high definition will be redefined as 720p?

Blu-ray is limited to 24fps for 1080p. All other frame rates are 1080i. 1080i and 720p have about the same spatial resolution.

The Blu-ray version of The Hobbit is 1080/24p. As near as I can tell, everything on the 5-disc Blu-Ray/Blu-Ray 3D/DVD combo pack is all 1080/24p for the blu-rays, and 480/24p for the DVD. I can't find any reference to 720p at all.

If I filmed the Hobbit sequel with my 5D @ 720p 60p would that now be considered full HD too? :2vrolijk_08:

There's no way to do 48 fps on Blu-ray (not natively, and no pulldown scheme would let you do it smoothly over-60), so it would be silly to do it in anything but 1080/24.

I did find a 48 fps version of the Hobbit. It is called Uber High Definition and the resolution is 1280x534p. The problem is that this edition is created from motion interpolation from a 1080p 24 fps source. So this is not the real deal.

It's also not legal -- nor is it within the Blu-ray spec.

Never mind that "uber" high definition would have to be considerably higher in resolution for the term to be anything other than the pirated nonsense that it is.

So to clarify: the original post is utter nonsense, The Hobbit was not released in 720p, nor was it released in any manner of high frame rate.
