HMIs question about head noise

What I do is keep spare mag ballast for all my HMI's. They are heavy but when head noise is a problem because of the room or proximity to a mic I replace the electronic ballast with a mag. Not for everyone I would imagine.

Interesting solution.

I often rent spare ballasts when on location, & a magnetic option could be great.

Exactly. You choose a magnetic ballast when sound is of utmost importance and an electronic one when potential conflicts with frame rate or shutter speed are more important like for some kind of higher frame rate / slo mo work. That's why there's still a place for magnetic ballasts in the scheme of things.

Additionally Richard, ALL electronic ballast are very tempermental and fragile. An old mag ballast can save you...sometimes.
