HMIs: buyer’s guide (used and new)

I have only used them for one show. The bulbs held up. I suspect it may shorten the life some but for what you gain it may be worth it.

Los Angeles craigslist is fantastic for finding used HMI's. Right now there's a 2500 HMI Fresnel with the ballast for $525(!!!). Those 1.2k cheap Chinese HMI Fresnels on eBay are at least $900. I had to go up there from S.D. to grab some tungstens on the cheap for sure !

Are ballasts interchangable? So I've got an Ianiro 575 head, with double ended lamp, and wondering if any 575 ballast (with the same connector obviously) could be used with it, different brands arri etc, magnetic or electronic etc?

No they are not interchangeable (though i can't tell you why technically). Though most can be made to power-up whatever head you need to power.

Maybe someone with technical knowledge can chime in?
 
Any 575 ballast with a standard VEAM connector other than Arri will work. Arri places the notch in a different spot for their 575's than other manufacturers do, so even though it's the same connector and the same wiring, it won't work. LTM ballasts won't work either, they use a slightly smaller connector.

Cool, thanks a lot. I nearly bought a little Arri electronic ballast on ebay for my 575. I'll have to stick with the magnetic bulky IREM one then.

Eddie at advanced lighting can make a convertor cable for just about any HMI.
