Hive releasing “Super Hornet 575-C” @ CineGear

I have the fresnels on my 200-C's and they do not give me the same results as Arri tungsten fresnels(i.e: 300 or 650). Honestly the results I've gotten trying to cut with the fresnel/barndoors are not much better than with the open face reflector/barndoors on my 100-C's. In other words, no hard cut, just more or less "soft flagging" of the light.

This is good info to know R&G... I've been considering selling one of my 100's and getting a 200 instead for the extra output... but not sure. Have you tried your 200 with a Leko attachment ( mini or other) instead of the fresnel?

I have the mini-Source 4's on my 100's. I picked a few up for cheap a few years ago when my local Barbizon had a 'garage sale' *. They work well, but the output on the 100's is a little low. I haven't tried them on the 200's yet. I'd really like to try the adapter for the full-size Source 4 barrels(adapter is over $400). I think you can buy an LED Source 4 for a lot less than a 200 and the adapter and barrel(Hive sells a kit with the 200, barrel and adapter for over $2600). BUT I think the only way you're going to get a really hard, defined cut is with a Source 4/Leko barrel.

Has anyone noticed just how damn expensive Source 4's are, now? They used to be dirt cheap. Now the barrels themselves sell for more than an entire unit used to. Heck, B&H doesn't even stock them anymore.

Thanks - and YES! Prices for the adapters are quite high as are barrels. I've been keeping an eye out for used barrels - but no luck.

That’s one of the things. The barrels they are selling are refurbs! And they still want over $400 just for the barrel. I remember buying complete Source 4’s with 50 degree lenses for like $300. An entire functioning, ready to use light: $300. Now it costs you more than that for just part of it. Crazy.

So, I slapped one of my mini-Source 4's(50 degree) on one of my 200-C's today on a shoot. Don't bother. They absolutely destroy the output. I pulled it and put the fresnel back on. You would have to be in a fairly dark room for it to be effective. We were inside, but it still didn't cut it. Can't speak for the full sized barrels, since I don't have an adapter.

^ Thanks for that update R&G. For the price, I think I'm leaning toward getting the version 2 of the Source Four daylight LED to use for indoor jobs where I need that long throw with some punch.

For the money, I think that’s the right call. Can you control the color mixing of the RGB LED Source 4’s easily or do you need a DMX console? Or are you just getting a “white light” version? There are so many different ones, now...

I should have also said, “or fairly close”, too. But that’s one of the things with the Source 4’s, being able to throw from a distance to keep the shot clear. We had three cameras, so I didn’t have a lot of places to hide the light out of all shots to get it close enough for it to work in the configuration.

Rented a RGB Source Four once & hated it. Not sure exactly which model it was, but when I tried to do a table bounce there was a a rainbow of colors in the beam even when the optics were defocused. Think we tried two different lenses without luck. The local (NY) Gaffer said that was normal behavior for RGB Source Fours.

I think the RGB versions are called Lustr. I have not personally seen or used the LED versions - and so I'm hesitant to purchase without some trustworthy source to confirm the specs. (still seem to be mostly the old-style 750watt tungsten versions in use around me). But 9700 lumens at 4500K (goes up to 6500) and dimmable caught my attention - so this is the one I'm interested in:

That rang a bell so searched my old G&E orders, & the RGB Source Four we rented was a Lustr, but my useage only lasted 10 minutes before (out of frustration) sending the lamp back to the truck, & hopefully someone with more extensive experience will chime in.

[EDIT] Unfortunately I was working on the East Coast during the recent CineGear/LA, & thought hard about not accepting the gig in order to attend. It’s good to get hands-on time with new Camera/Lenses, & talk to their Reps, but spend most my time in the various Lighting booths. Would love to have chatted to ETC about the Lustr as I find it an intriguing option.

[EDIT #2]Reviewed the email chain & originally requested a pair of Hive’s 200-C with Source Fours configurations, but they were all booked in NYC, so substituted Lustr(s).

I also remembered after posting earlier today that Apurture is supposed to have some type of leko style attachment for the new 300d II model this fall... so I will likely wait to see early reviews of it - since it may have even more output and also be able to run off v mount batts at a slightly lower price perhaps.

This light intrigues the hell out of me. I own a 100-C and a 200-C. Got the fresnel attachment and a couple of pars. I mostly use the 200-C with a Westcott Rapid Box beauty dish as a key light for interviews. Works great.
