HIVE LIGHTING ANNOUNCES the BEE 50-C and HORNET 200-C

In my inbox today...two new product announcements from HIVE both expected to ship in June - to compliment the existing 100-C model.
The Hornet 200-C (150W omni-color LED) & the Bee 50-C (40W omni LED)

I like where these guys are headed...I'm most interested in the 200 to possibly use with my 100-c's...if the punch/output is " 2.5X the output of the original Wasp 100-C"...
 
Bit of a head scratcher why they labeled the 100W LED a 100C, & a 150W LED a 200-C. Also wonder how many amps it draws that it requires a 24-36V battery?

That said, I am very interested in the 200-C with Fresnel.

That is a head scratcher - didn't notice that earlier. Also a head scratcher that they claim "2.5X the output of the 100-C" - and then state the equivalency as "700-1000W incandescent" - which doesn't make sense / add up - since the original 100-C was supposed to be equivalent to roughly a 650W.
If the output is 2.5X times, then I can see selling one of my 100-C's to swap for the 200...
 
This discussion is going on over on Newsshooter, as well. Jon from Hive chimed in and said that the "output" wasn't as black and white as you'd think, because the units are designed to accept and work with a wide range of reflectors, attachments and modifiers which can greatly impact how much punch you can get out of it. And I know that a lot of people use them with only third party reflectors/attachments, so in a way that makes sense, but you'd think that they would give numbers based on the stock reflector and/or their fresnel unit. Someone suggested giving the output of just the emitter, but I don't see how that's really helpful.

Thanks for having this discussion about our lights! So just a quick summary of the naming conventions. The Bee 50-C , the Wasp 100-C and the Hornet 200-C are names are not directly tied to a wattage or lumen level, but instead a general indication of size, output and relative difference. The actual respective wattages are are 40W, 75W and 140W (this is DC voltage for the purpose of battery needs, each AC/DC power supply will pull a couple more watts). The lumen output of each is 2000, 5000 and 12,000 respectively. But because of the different optic for each the output levels can range when we give equivalencies. The Bee 50-C is a 200 - 500W incandescent output, the Wasp 100-C is a 300 - 7000W incandescent equivalent, the 200-C is roughly 700 - 1000W. The 2.5X number from Hornet 200-C to the Wasp100C is based on our footcandle measurements on the stock par reflector for each unit. In this case a Wasp 100-C gets 110 FC at 10ft and the Hornet 200-C gets 275FC at 10ft.

I saw the photometrics for the 200-C. I am curious about Hive's claim that the 200-C is "the brightest single point source color changing LED on the market". I am currently evaluating the Fiilex Q8 Travel and their photometrics are clearly about double those of the 200-C, which I would expect as the Fiilex light weighs a lot more than the 200-C, is much larger, and consumes DC 300/AC 340 watts. Is the Fiilex Q8 Travel not considered a single point source color changing LED? It is capable of output from 2800K to 6500k and has a hue control that allows for fine tuning magenta/green response, am I misunderstanding your nomenclature? Is Bi-Color with hue control not considered "color changing"?
 
Wow... finally... I like that 200-c, and they made it versatile with accessories as well! Almost a no brainer? I don't think the price point is even too high...
 
Thanks for this question I am copying an answer I gave to a similar question on Cinema 5D:

Our point was full color changing, both white light and saturated color and the hue control to use both at the same time. Color Changing like this is avaible on lights like the Gemini, Kino Freestyle, Arri Skypanel. Obviously there are brighter bi-color lights on the market. There are also brighter full color changing lights, take a Skypanel 360 for example that is much brighter, but we were being very specific in this claim, full color and point source. The Fiilex you describe uses more than twice the power so is obviously brighter but we would describe it as a bi-color and since it is a bi-color chip array behind a fresnel and cannot be treated as a point source that can go into multiple different optics and perform like a point source, no we would not consider it comparable to the specific claim we were trying to make.

Having said that we are not trying to confuse or be disingenuous with our wording, in fact we were trying to high light the unique benefits of our lights and the specific category this excels in. We will go out of our way to clarify this even further whenever possible, but I want to emphasize we are not the brightest light in the world, but considering the control and design of this light, the Hornet 200-C’s output level with the optics and color control available is unique
 
Hey Jon - thanks for jumping in & clarifying! I'm a happy kickstarter owner of two 100-C's. Looking forward to seeing the 200-C & love that it will be able to accept same accessories (I've got profoto speed rings, etc) that I've bought for my 100's. Assume the fresnel attachment also fits both (or all 3) lights & does lower the FC output slightly compared to the 25° stock par reflector?

Terminology and output measurement in the LED market is still the wild west and many product claims are relatively meaningless so thanks for clarifying your position Jon, that makes sense. They look like pretty innovative lights too.
 
As someone who's always traveling, curious what the weight and dimensions are for the power supplies, specifically the Hornet 200-C™ Power Supply 100-240 VAC?
