Hive 100-C Initial Impressions

MarkFPV: Ah, yes. In a rush, I looked at the Hive branded barrel/lens combo, which is their full sized barrel for the Wasp/Bee 250 units.

I think I personally value the compactness of the 100-c, given its output. But yeah, gobo and zooming are key features I'd want to have with the 100-C.

On a side note, does anyone know if the Wasp 1K is compatible with the full sized Source 4 barrel system? It may seem overkill, but I really want the option to play with shapes that can compete with the sun in day interiors...as opposed to the 100-c, which will be more for low-light interiors and night time exteriors (as far as throwing shapes, that is).

The lamp on the Wasp 1K extends out from the body of the fixture and is surrounded by a wire mess Faraday cage. (It's kinda amazing, really. I suggested they call it the flux-capacitor.) Because of this extension, there is currently no way one can mount a Source-4 barrel in front of it. However I suggested it and they said that it could be done and if enough people asked they would look into it, so I suggest you reach out to Hive directly.

Thanks, Mitch! Yeah, will do. I love the 1K. It's like a slightly more convenient M18, which is a super popular fixture! Plus, you don't have to be as careful with house circuits as you have to with the M18 HMI. Although I hardly see it on sets...even sets where the M18s are the biggest lights.

Rafael, I don't think that's quite fair to say. I haven't seen Hive lights in person but check out Stuart Allman's posts on the cinematography.com forum

He says it's closer to a 1200w Arrisun. While the Hives still have their advantages, competing with an M18 doesn't seem like one of them.

Interesting. Yeah, I've never done a side by side. Thanks for the link!

For those considering this light - and it's output - here's a quick set up / test I did yesterday late afternoon in my kitchen out of curiosity to see what I could get using only two 100-C's:
kitchen is approx 17' x 12' - one unit has std 25° reflector on, no lens, with barn doors - shooting thru a quickly made cardboard pattern :-) to create soft pattern on back wall (light is approx 14 ft from that wall). Other unit has 25° std reflector with "wide" lens & barn door'd - for foreground cups only on black marble counter. No other practicals / lights used. Distance between cups & back wall is about 10ft.
Exposed the a6300 for the windows - wb on cam set to 5500k, iso 800, 1/60 @f8 (no profile) with white starbucks cup in shot, (@f6.7 in shot without) & the foreground light was set to 5600k at 90% output, no hue or sat. The light for the back wall was set at 6400k, 100% output and then adjusted hue /sat - a bit more orange - using phone app until output created a bit of that morning sun look on wall. Windows in shot face north (the single) / east (the double) and time of day was late afternoon - so little direct sunlight thru the windows.
Not sure why - but couldn't insert images into this post even after downsizing... so here's a dropbox link:

apologies for the dirty kitchen  but I personally think having s4 optics - would make the unit even more versatile... it is certainly not competing with the wasp or even 800w hmi... but this might give you idea how it could be used...
