Historic photos and video?

I'm putting together an educational video and I need historic videos or photos to put in as I talk about various events or people. For example Ghandi, Lincoln, Newton, WWII, etc. I want to avoid any copyright infringement, and I don't want to pay much or anything if I can help it.

Any suggestions or websites that could be helpful? Any resources to point to in order to get this information?

Thanks people. And thank all of you that spend the time helping us in so many ways.

I just saw the thread below on some of the video, but I think I'd be better served with just historic photos of famous people that I could use the Ken Burns effect on. Any ideas?

Library of Congress, The Smithsonian, Bettman Archive, Corbis

Not necessarily free

not sure if this will have what you need, but there should probably be a thread about this alone:

Basically it's 500gigs of public domain video made available by the US Government. Includes a lot of cool WW2 and Cold War era films.

Great info, but how do you download anything from these websites?

You contact their sales/licensing departments and ask what you need to do to incorporate their footage into one of your productions. It's not likely you can just surf to a site, download something that catches your eye, and use it.
