Highlighting someone in the clip

I need to show a group photo then maybe tint the clip then highlighting a person within the photo. I used a white shape matte (circle) to use to highlight the person. I adjusted the opacity so you could still see the person. What I noticed was that when I adjusted the matte to be smaller since I needed to only highlight one person the tint seemed to be attached to the matte if you follow what I am saying. When I slid the matte shape over to the left side of the clip, the black part of the matte slid over with it. So I need to figure out a different way to do this.

Would I set it up the same way as if I wanted to blur someone's face out? I think I put the same clip on the track right above the first one then I added a blur filter to one of the tracks. Wondering if I need to do something like that to highlight someone in the shot and have the rest of the shot tinted so your eye focuses on the highlighted person.

Damn homey, you tired me out with all the twist and turns to your prob. But like BenB said PS it, make all your layers there (doubles if needed) and then manipulate back in FCP. Just finished doing like 40 freeze frame intros so I feel your pain. Thank GOD for "Actions".

got me thinking, you could even make your blurred layer in PS and reveal it in FCP. If your matte & tint is following your adjustments you could make it the size you need it to be, then nest it to the target layer and the tint will no longer move. Very similiar in concept to precomping in AE. In fact I just realized this recently after using both since FCP 1 and AE 4.
