Highlight a portion of Video in FCP?

Hello,

I'm editing a project for a local football team that consists of rough clips of various plays. In each play, I'd like to start the clip by "highlighting" the key player with a circle around him and maybe brighten that portion of the picture while dimming the background. This frame would then freeze for a second or so, then return to the regular footage. This effect would allow football scouts to more easily follow the key player in each play.

I've seen this effect on countless ESPN SportsCenters and other sports shows, but can't figure out how to do this in FCP.

Anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks!

Add a shape mask and overlay it ontop of the video track. Change the size etc in the controls tab of the viewer and lower the opacity of the shape track so you can see "under" it too.

As for the freeze frame. You would probably need to split the clip using the razor blade tool (may have to cut it in 2 places) then select that clip, go to the top menu and I think go to SELECT and click on MAKE FREEZE FRAME or STILL IMAGE, take the still and drop that back into the timeline and trim it down to your liking then slide the rest of the clip back to the frozen frame and it should play normal, freeze for however long you want it and then play back at normal speed. There could be an easier way to do this but that is how I have been doing it and its worked fine for me.
