Higher frame rates and speed alterations in FCP

When I edit with 50fps Red or Hvx footage (PAL Land) I often need to alter the speeds in FCP. My mind tells me that footage at 50fps being played back at 25 should look normal speed when I increase the speed x2 (200%). But it doesn't and it looks pony. How do I get this 50fps footage to look like it was shot normal 25p?

Sounds right to me...What was your shutter speed? If you shot with a higher shutter speed than normal for less motion blur, it could be affecting the 'look' of your video. Did you shoot with interlacing?

Why the assumption that I'm not working in a professional environment?

I don't know what the shutter speed is as I don't shoot them. This is an issue that has occurred over and over again. I've had it with HVX, Phantom Gold and Red. Always progressive. Tried with and without frame blending. Slow-mo 50fps sped up 200% does certainly not look like it was shot standard 25p. Are you saying that you have never had this problem?

Sorry, BW - what are you referring to?

No, I have not had the problem you are referring to. Just thought it would be helpful for you to hear some feedback on you question and hopefully point you toward a solution.

What is the exact issue that you are seeing?

When you double the speed of the 50fps footage, does it not appear to be moving at normal speed? Or is there something wrong with the motion rendering, as in it looks strobed, or something else?

To really get 50p footage to look normal at 25p, I think the 50p footage would have had to have been shot with twice as long a shutter speed as the rest of the 25p footage.

You also need to make sure that you are handling the footage correctly in FCP, and the program isn't automatically processing the footage in some way counter to what you are trying to achieve.

Are the clips actual 50p video, as in meant to be played back at 50fps, or are they 25p but recording with 50fps slow-motion?

The footage has been shot at 50 but comes into the edit as 25. So final cut reads the source footage as 25p but it plays back at half speed (as in - no slowing down the footage in edit). When I speed the clip up x2 (200 in FCP) with the intention of replicating a shot that looks like it was shot native 25, it looks like it's a bit faster than normal speed. It looks like it was shot at some odd frame rate or rather sped up just slightly in post. I'm sure this goes beyond a shutter speed issue. I've tried frame blending on and off and no luck.

Are you sure that the footage is actually 50fps, and not some other slow/fast speed frame rate that was recorded over a base of 50p?

On an NTSC HVX, I know you can record say 48fps VFR (or the like) when shooting 720p60.
