HIgh quality free mov to avi converter

Ive tried a few different free mov to avi converters and they all seem to lose quality during the conversion, and the file size is also much smaller than the source file.

What do you all use for your mov to avi conversions? Or are there just no good free ones out there?
 
Come on people, Im about to pull my hair out. Handbrake converts to MP4 but Virtualdub wont even recognize that. HELP!
