High Pass Filter on Rode NG1

Guys,

I'm shooting several one person lit interviews tomorrow for a corporate client. I'm shooting these interviews in a reserved hotel conference room near an airport and will be using my Rode NTG1 shotgun on a boom. My question is..... Should I be using the High Pass filter on the mic or should I be using the mic in the Flat Response mode ?
I've tested the mic in both modes in the studio and can't recognize any real difference in sound after capturing in Final Cut. When should I be using the High Pass Filter and what exactly does it do ? I know I should use it in windy conditions. Someone once told me that they leave their mic in this mode at all times... Not sure if that's good..

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice.

I've found little to no difference in most voices when using the high pass on mine. I leave it on for the most part to cut out air conditioners, computers, etc. Do keep in mind though that you may find some low voices that get cut off by the high pass filter.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the instances where using a HPF in field recording would hurt are far outnumbered by the instances where HPF would help.

IMHO, the high pass should probably be in most dialog recording situations except perhaps when recording the deepest of bass voices such as James Earl Jones. Virtually no signifigant energy lies below about 100Hz in most voices. OTOH, infra-sonic noise can overload mic preamps or trigger limiters even when it's inaudible to the ear. Recording music would be another issue though and most of the time it should be turned off. But how many times do you (or should you) record music with a shotgun.

Thanks guys..

Shot the interviews on Tuesday with the high pass filter set on the mic. Everything sounded great, well except for all the freaking jets taking off from the airport. Yep, had to shoot in a conference room at the Hilton just outside Austin Bergstrom airport.

Thanks again for all your help guys.
