High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

I picked up the 2 Disc DVD HELLBOY today for my son and I to junkie on (He's 4 but as long as I tell him Hellboy is a goodguy it'll be all good) but on the back it says:

Mastered in High Definition

can anyone explain HOW this works and what the benefit is? I don't have HD but am looking into getting it. Barry?

I believe that is tricky advertising. The DVD itself doesn't contain an HD version. But, the master that the video on the DVD was created from is HD. When they start producing HD-DVDs, they will be able to pump out an HD version of the movie.

Also, I think you will need a new DVD player to support the HD-DVDs. And, of course, an HD teevee.

$$$$$$ Ka-ching! $$$$$$

;)

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

Yeah, correct me if Im wrong, but it means that the mastering process took place on a High Def version of the film. Im not sure what the benefit of that might be, but I guess it cant be any worse?

Basically you can read into it that they took that mastering process seriously. Take that for what you will

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

HD does nothing on a standard DVD. Doesn't mean much more than the THX certification.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

So even if I had HDTV unless the DVD itself was a HDDVD it means nothing?

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

Hellboy could be mastered from a High Definition source, but at the present moment cannot be mastered as HD to a standard DVD. The current crop of DVDs is only capable of playing at 480 lines of resolution. The ATSC definition of Standard Definition (SD) television is 480i/480p. High Definition television by today’s standards is 720p or 1080i.

There are several competing technologies for HD-DVD (i.e. blue-ray), but at the present there are no consumer HD-DVD players or HD-DVDs on the market.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

This is interesting (PC playback only though)...

"Image Entertainment Releases the Largest Set of High-Definition Content Available on DVD"

"All Programs Originally Created for Exhibition in IMAX Theatres"

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/040629/295238_1.html

All the info I've read says it'll be 2005-2006 before hi-def players/content hits the US (Blu-Ray, like Ranger mentioned)

I wouldn't say it's a gimmick, per se... if it's what they did, it's what they did. Will it do much for you, on your DVD? Probably not. I haven't seen a side-by-side comparison, but I doubt anyone would be able to see a difference between film telecine'd to Digital Betacam and then to DVD, vs. a film telecine'd to HD and then to SD and then to DVD. Could be wrong, but I doubt it makes much difference.

What they're probably saying is, they have a high-def version somewhere (for HD broadcast, probably, or HD-DVD's) and that's the version they used to master your DVD from. I doubt it brings any additional picture quality to the DVD format, but it's probably the best-quality source you could hope for.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

see. now, my friend bought a dvd progressive, and an HD TV... or HDTV ready.. and he's got HDTV service from VOOM. http://voom.com/index.jsp
and because he has progressive he thinks that he can view some DVD's that are HD ready. i tried to tell him there are no HD DVD's. it would be impossible to fit into a regular DVD... especially was doubting myself now that they have those HD encoders but whatever, i haven't seen one yet!
you need a true progressive HD player and HD TV and HD wires. to get HDTV. everything else is just a go around.

hey, those programs in HD discovery looks hot! especially the 24p ones!

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

The Samsung may upconvert an image to 720p, but it's still coming from a 480 source. It's not true HD that you are looking at, but just a great video scaler.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

well, also remember that even though there are no HD DVDs, if u have a HD widescreen TV you can scretch an anamorphic tranfer to fill the screen offering more vertical resolution than with a regular tv.

In case anyone doesnt know, most widescreen dvds have all the information to display full virtical resolution on a standerd display but the put those letterbox bars on the top and botton so u get the full image, but the information's cramed in there. So if u have a wide screen display, u can strech it virtically wich gets rid of the bars and displays it at a proper ration so ur ppl in the movie arnt fat. Anyway when u do this the dvd's using the full virtical resolution of the tv. Its not High def, its standerd res, but whn u watch on a regular tv half of vertical res is used up by black bars. **** i hope that wasnt to convoluted an explaination, Its late I can barely type let alone think.

Basically even though there are no HD DVDs, if u have a widescreen HD tv, ur still getting higher resolution than on a standered tv

It would have to be an HD-DVD (which is not the same as Blu-Ray or the Bravo WM9 HD player) AND you would have to have a compatible player and HDTV to get the benefit.

The players aren't on the market yet. More format wars to come.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

soon, there will be new expensive DVD players on the market. they have a blue laser to read the dvd in Hi Definition. i saw a demo of it behind closed doors at a local electronics store where a family friend works. its pretty cool. you will have to buy a whole new set though.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

The DVDs will have to be specially coded for HD, and I believe the Blu-Ray machines will require the DVDs to be in cartridges (that’s, like, so ‘80s, dude). HD-DVD uses a red laser, and the WM9 player uses standard DVDs, but with the content encoded in WM9 format instead of MPEG-2.

Word of backward-compatibility (can you play your existing DVD library on them?) is conflicting.

Re: High Definition, Hellboy and Barry Green

This is something i've been looking forward to for a long time (them getting the format throwdown overwith and pumping out a standard spec). A true consumer HD recordable/playback format. Right now all you can do is hope to catch something worth watching on an HD broadcast channel if you want to watch HD. Once it's available on a playable media format, i'm gonna be a happy boy! (vs hooking up a D5 deck to my HDTV) :) :) :)
