Hiding a Lav Mic.. Good info I found..

Glad the other guys could send you in the right direction. As far as the strain relief its just like using any other piece of tape.
Sometimes you put a loop in it, sometimes ya don't. Just depends on the outfit/situation.

hey all you Mr. Hydes. I just bought a OST 802 lav (looks like a Tram). Is there a magic trick on how to get them clear of rustle when hidden? (Like "wrapping moleskin around the lav" for Sanken Cos style mics).

Haven't used moleskin yet but I really like using top stick. One big problem I've had is wiring men with hairy chests. Habit wants me to put the mic directly on the chest if clothing allows, but a lot of the time the guy has some pretty long chest hair. Funny, short chest hair isn't a problem, it's actually the long hair that pushes the mic away from the chest so it just dangles around in his shirt. Am I packing a razor from now on?

For women I've found that with a bra, I only need an adhesive in order to place the mic against her skin in the middle of her chest cavity. What I've found, no matter the clothing (with the exception of skin tight items) her breasts keep the clothing far enough away so that I have no rubbing anywhere near the mic.

This is a great thread. Thanks to all. Some photos of the moleskin technique would be greatly appreciated. In my work thus far, I have been able to use exposed lavs, but I know the day cometh.

Regarding the hairy chest...I read about a solution that has worked for me on another forum a while ago. Buy some Rycote Overcovers (the stick on fuzzy windscreen). If wearing an undershirt, place lav on undershirt mid line on the chest using the Rycote Stickies and place the Overcover on top of the lav. The fuzzy from the windscreen helps to diffuse the hair on the chest. A razor thought wouldn't hurt if they're really serious about their craft.

Undershirts are pretty helpful. The issue I had was with guys who wore button up shirts without anything under. Luckily they weren't all hairy, and I might've ended up placing the lav against the inside of the shirt off the skin. I can't find a good other alternative. Taking a razor to them wouldn't be fun for either party, but I've heard it happen.
