Hi, I'm Stephen

Hi everyone.

I've dabbled in video since back in 2002 when DVDs were the next big thing, cost a fortune, took ages to burn, and often resulted in coasters. But for most of the time since then, I've just done still photography. I decided to get back into video more seriously in the late 2010s and have taken advantage of YouTube to share things with other people. I always had a small interest in journalism, which I never pursued in any way, so I decided to pursue some video journalism during the lockdowns. I've since done a few zero budget music videos, lots of youtube videos about matters of local interest, and even tried to help someone with his idea for a short film last year (which unfortunately never really took off).

I keep contemplating seeing if I can turn my video & photography interests into a business of some kind. I like going out and shooting things of interest when I get the chance, so I'm pondering having a go at the stock footage business. I doubt I'd make much money, but it would be worth a go.

I'm hoping in the foreseeable future to improve my knowledge/skill on lighting and colour grading.

I used to be a big user of forums, but never really bothered joining a video forum, so here I am :).

Stephen Coates.

P.S. Yes, I even did the unthinkable and made my first 9:16 vertical video a few months ago .

Hi Stephen welcome to the forum! You can learn a lot about filmmaking here, and the people here will help you get up to speed to where you need to be.

Welcome, Stephen! There are fantastic (often helpful) people here, with many collective decades (centuries... millennia?!) of experience between them. Good luck in your new ventures.

Thanks for the welcomes.

You've joined them have you? ....... Well, that's the way of the world. Keep up or get left behind.

There is a lengthy thread about stock footage that started in 2022 and continues with discussion to this day - https://www.dvxuser.com/threads/lets-talk-stock-footage.5688231/
For those who want some amusement, here's my first ever vertical video, which I made with my vintage Sony DSR-570. I don't recommend this particular setup; it promptly causes neck pain :).

To be honest, I really don't see why vertical video is taking off so much. It is highly inappropriate for most applications. The only place I've seen it used to good effect is in signage applications.

Ive found your channel. The riots are pretty interest.

FYI I now have a dji osmo 3 (fake gopro) as chest mount on such events.

You were assaulted multiple times - the gopro footage would be good to record your conduct and that of others around you.

I've done that with my own GoPro and a chest mount on a few occasions before. Usually I prefer not to as it adds to the faff, but it can be handy. I did actually have my gopro with me for the riot, but I forgot to charge the battery.

My GoPro is a very old one, so is not very good by today's standards, but it does well enough for what I want it for. How are you getting on with the Osmo? I've seen some good footage out of them.

Here's a good view of me getting a whack taken on someone else's GoPro: https://www.youtube.com/clip/Ugkx3w0ZMuD3cghg_vHhjFtmQfA93ReCVfbe
I didn't bother making a complaint to the police about it, but the person involved ended up getting two years for 'violent disorder', mostly stemming from threatening a policeman with a dog.

I had a gopro three. this was pretty rough and with no screen was hard to compose a shot. I decided it was time to upgrade.

I saw a random motorobike video on YT and it was smooth with level horizon.. actually amazing.

I bought the Osmo3 action on the video on the day the 4 was announced which saved some $$$$

Is it good??

Well I have no comparision vs the gopro12 or wherever we are. .. but yes it is good.

The image is good, it has 'made' (the edit) on some of myy professional jobs

The triple battery box is good.
I bought some ND filters that fit the round lens.. good.
Mainly using for body cam I dont ND and leave it on.. auto!

For blogging its also excellent.. so yes it is very much good.

Better than the competition? I have no idea.

Thats bad. The approach from behind and you were not standing somewhere 'stupid'
Id probably have kicked off - nice that you were calm.

I would have beat the **** out of the guy. Seriously. I'd never let someone get away with shoving me like that. Never.

He would certainly deserve it. But I am not a particularly aggressive person and sometimes (when no real harm is done) it can be better to try and ignore them to avoid getting in to a fight.

I managed to easily get rid of a couple of mouthy annoying protesters the other week by having that attitude. Turns out one of them later got arrested for harassing someone else! I was actually recovering from a bad illness at the time so I was deliberately trying to keep out of the way of everyone. Normally I'd try and get a bit more involved.
