hey guys i have been lurker here for a few weeks learning. great site! i want to buy a cam to do weddings with. i don't really have a budget yet im trying to narrow down the cam i want first. i am looking for a nice older middle of the road cam or the cam that was the gotta have 2 or 3 year back but is still usable. i know hd is the future but if i can get a sd cam to start out with that what i want to do. (i have these gigs lined up all ready if they go well i would have enough to get what ever cam i wanted) i have a studio and have been working with artists in sony vegas for music videos so i can edit (i m still learning). i do want two cams but not yet. cams i have been checking on canon xl1 , Panasonic DVX100 (or DVX100A or DVX100B), Sony HVR-Z1U thanks in advance foor any help.

If you're looking for SD, I would guess that the majority of people around here would recommend the DVX series. Imagine that. :) There's only one potential drawback that I see to the DVX for wedding work, and that's the 10X zoom; I have run into issues on event-type shoots where that simply wasn't enough reach for where I was told to be, and I can see the same thing happening in a larger church where you're only allowed to shoot from the balcony. A lot of people have never experienced this problem, though, so that's why I call it a "potential" drawback. :)

I've shot one wedding with an XL1S and another with a GL2 (I do it just for friends), and both did well (by my not-doing-this-for-a-living standards :) ).

Your other option would be to see what the XH-A1 is going for on the used market. This gives you the option to shoot SD now and the upside to go HD when you're ready. Plus it's got better audio options than the XL1.

The DVX is not only my favorite out of the choices for a few reasons, it's the most cost effective of any other prosumer SD camera. You can get them pretty cheap used. I don't recommend buying it new, since this doesn't seem to be a long term investment for you.

whats the price range used on the dvx ?

i have sold items on ebay since 00 i never use them as a gauge on how much something cost. there are too many people who have things that they think are worth more than it really cost. you always have to find the people who use the item in question to find what its worth. but i have found that they run about 1600 for a 100b on the low end and less for the 100 and 100a. if 1600 is the that number what else should i be looking at? is the dvx100b going to be the best cam in that price range?
what the difference between the dvx 100 cams?
