Hi Hat & bogen 503 head...

hello.

i'm in a DIY building mode...

i have a 503/525mvb bogen head/tripod and i want to play around with a Hi-Hat.

i don't know much about hi-hats, i know the bogen has a 75mm half bowl.

would this fit with my 503 head+the handle underneath that lets you adjust the postion of the head??

i wasn't sure if the handle that goes underneat the head/tripod to move around the head were too long to fit on the hi-hat without hitting the board it's all bolted to.

Re: Hi Hat & bogen 503 head...

I've tested the head on a 100mm half-bowl and it's just barely too long. You'd have to trim the threaded rod but i think the rubber grip would also still be too long. Manfrotto used to make a locking knuckle before they started using that rubber grip. If you can find one of those plus cutting the rod it should work. Not sure about 75mm half bowls...'cause i think their rubber grips are shorter.

thanks for the info.

the damn product descriptions never seem to list the height or spacing on the hi-hats.

if i had more info i could probably get a board thick enough to make a hole all the way though.

You could always mount the high hat on some spacers before the board. It will just make it a higher hat.

Re: Hi Hat & bogen 503 head...

That's a good idea..mounting it on platforms...

I use a much cheapter alternative:

It just bolts onto the head. Bolts on each corner allow me to make fine tune adjustments to level everything out. It works quite well..it just takes a little longer to change from sticks to this board and back instead of a real hi-hat.

Re: Hi Hat & bogen 503 head...

guys... you dont need to cut anything. all you need to do is buy a 3/8 threaded grip star nut from home depot and it works in leu of the long handle bolt... at least thats what i do.

Re: Hi Hat & bogen 503 head...

my current setup is some lower price bogen head (with the bubble levels) and a 12"x12" piece of plywood with a 3/8 bolt through the center.

btw, if you don't have a head with a level b&h has a couple of different bubble levels that fit in the shoe on top of the camera.
