Hi Guys

I am a new apple user. I have jumped ship from the PC platform to MACPRO QUAD 3.0.

I got tired of fixing and updating and fixing bugs and whatever with the PC. I am still going to keep them around for burning DVD or whatever. I am hoping I don't experience the same problems in the apple world.

First of all This machine is sexy...wow...I felt real special owning one just by the first impression looks of the damn thing.

Second.. I have a server rack which both my dual Xeon and my quad AMD 64 machine reside in a cold room simple to insulate the fan noise and to look cool.
This machine is whisper quiet. So I am leaving beside my desk for display.

I purchased Final Cut Pro Studio and soon ready to begin the learning process.

A few questions for the community.
1) Due to limited funds I went the way of 3.0 cpu and barebones everything else. I would like to purchase 4 500GB Sata 3.0 and raid them as one big 2TB main drive. I assume you boot from the OS disk and can raid the from there..correct?

is this a good idea?

2) I heard of a program that allows the user to ingest video and edit simultaneously in FCP. I belive it was I gallery but I gallery sounds like a photo slideshow program. ANy know what the name of this program is?

3) is Shake worth the $500.00?

4) can soundtrack pro encode 5.1 surround sound?

5) any cool tips anyone wants to share?

Well hello every body in the apple DVXuser world.

3) Yes shake is worth that much, not so much just simply for the software, but the income potential. For making a 2 min piece with shake for a client you can charge them upwards of $1000. This program can pay for itself in one to two jobs. But thats only if you know how to use the program to make money with it. Its a very complex program

1. You actually have one free ATA and 6 SATA ports on the MacPro. The last two SATA ports are on the mainboard, and you'll have to connect them externally. That said:
It is recomended to have separate media and app/system drives. Make the 2nd ATA port (in the free optical drive bay) your startup, and raid the rest.

2: ???

3: Yes!

4: Nope, but compressor can

5: For all things FCP: Read around here, and at the creativecow.net.
Tons and tons of info.

Check out the Apple Pro Books and go through the tutorials. It's really worth the while...

Hello to you, too

Gunleik

6 Sata ports really ..jess I am such a newbie on this platform. Do you know if there is a hardware raid chip on the motherboard?

What is the fastest raid sata drives these days for mac?

Hmmm.. bummer on the 5.1 cause that a feature I sell. compressor is a program I must buy?

already sitting here and learning from creative cow about shake...wow looks hard. I simply want Shake to smooth out the bummpy cam shots. Maybe I will get into comping later on.

You can author 5.1 Surround sound in STP, save each track out seperately, then configure and compress them in Compressor.

Welcome to Mac World!

Wow... this thing scrols through HDV fils like a dj scrathing a record.
I was using a quad amd 64 and it was risky doing anything major while capturing such as playing a video clip. this thing is ingesting while playing quicktime Hd files.

If you're working with HDV in FCP, it's much nicer to use the Apple Intermediate Codec for HDV (AIC). As your project gets larger, you'll really want to capture and edit with AIC.

The mac is truly an amazing machine. Even the stuff it does with Iphoto, Imovie and Idvd is crazy. I feel dumb that I was doing slides shows manually on the timeline all this time.

FCP is going to take some getting use to. I think I am going to hafto take a course.

welcome to the macworld.
firstly we hope the ad campaign we recently launched did not make you feel like you had to move to our side......
anyway if this was the reason you moved - well............. I feel bad and good at the same time. I have this warm fuzzy save everyone from the evil of PC feeling.
Hey - hang on...... mac is perhaps the most unfriendly to the P2 - we don't like these MXF files and we convert it all to Quciktime - so know that you are over on this side - please click the button that says "Send Feedback" on the FCP menus and tell apple this is "not cool" and actually PC is the one in T-shirt and Jeans on all the HVX shoots. ( seriously send them your 2 cents)
Welcome.......

Thank you everyone.

FCP 's work flow compared to Vegas is Hard. Also at a much higher level.

I need more template Filters and transition for Motion and FCP. Anyone know where to buy or better yet download free?

If you're looking for filters, you need to learn the NLE better. There are many free downloads, too many for me to list here, but you really need to learn the NLE. Unlike Vegas, FCP doesn't hold your hand, it expects you to work and be knowledgeable as a professional editor.

What specific type of effects are you looking for?

I know I am going to hafto to step up my proffesion. Just basic stuff like glow, fuzzy borders, black and white (hehe I know).

Roam wasen't built in a day going to hafto learn this bit by bit.

If Sony made a Mac version of Vegas than ran properly with a few modifaction like multiscreen and timecode to the timeline. I would be happy as a pig in doo doo.

:^)

I am glad that I went with the basic config and put my dough into the 3.0CPU. Today I bought from my local computer store the 667 ddr2 FB ram 1GB stick for half the price that Apple sells it for on thier site.

It was funny to see these hardcore PC guys yammering about the MACPRO two of them are going to buy 1. I said but you work in a PC store why not build a dual core machine. They said first of all it would look anywhere as nice and they are all interested in the Mac platform now they can use both as well as the cost of the parts are not that far off from just buying a Mac. Apparently the core MacPro is fairly cheap its the add ons that add up.

These PC Gurus also said that they read on some site that the MACPRO motherboard can handle the new quad core intel chips no problem. so when those CPU become cheaper I can upgrade my MACPRO to a octette machine.

wow.

I think apple is going to win over a few PC people with the new intergration os intel chips. The OS is a try once love type deal.

Much of that can be done with the tools FCP already has. Check here, most of these folks have freebies to try out.

You really need to get these two books and just do them, as there's TONS of stuff you can do without plug-ins in FCP, once you properly learn the app.

Apple Pro Training Series; Final Cut Pro 5
Apple Pro Training Series; Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5

Yeah, computer store PC gurus, as a retired IT Engineer, I know that type all too well. If Wal-Mart hires me to work the counter in their auto repair dept, does that make me a master mechanic? Point it, don't count on being able to upgrade an Apple system board that easily. My bet is, it won't work. There's tons of bad info on the Internet.

Actually the quad core chips have alredy been poped into the mac pro and, while the reviewer couldn't reveal any specifics, they did post a screenshot of MacPro running on all 8 cylinders and stated that is is very much a possiblility.

Even as now, you couldbuy the bottom 2.0 MaCPro and just buy a faster chip in 6 months Quad, or not. The CPU is upgradeable.
