Hi 8

Did some searching found nothing. I'm trying to capture some footage on a Hi8 Camcorder into vegas, but All the frames keep dropping.

It will not capture properly. I have the Hi-8 camcorder running to my DVX and using my DVX in VCR mode and Fire Fire to my computer. Everything is fine until I begin to capture, all the frames drop.

Can anyone please help me. Is there a special setting I need to do before capturing.

Thanks in advance.

Wild wild shot in the dark... (speculative)
Sometimes a weird analog signal will cause vegas to drop frames... (from what I remember).
I think it's just glitch up when that happens, but Vegas will maintain sync.

Maybe one thing to try is to record onto miniDV first, then into Vegas. A timebase corrector may also help.

Maybe best thing to do is record to miniDV then capture from that. Then that way you also have a digital backup on tape for the archives.

This should have nothing to do with "analog and vegas" because in this chain vegas is getting straight DV footage from the DVX (or it should be). The downside to recording to tape first is wear on the heads, wear while taping and more wear while capturing, as opposed to passthrough (not to mention it'll take twice as long). I'm assuming you have no problem capturing DV footage off the DVX right? You may want to double-check everything in your passthrough chain.

I didn't want to have to record first then capture it in vegas, lot of more and the wear and tare thing... I tripple check everything, all the cables are connected properly.

I can view the footage, it's right when I begin to capture, all the frames drop. And Yes, I can capture just fine with the regular DVX, though let me just double check see if it's the Hi-8 or something else, I'm about to capture regular DV now..

Can you tell Vegas not to capture timecode, but rather only Audio and Video? Sometimes I have capture issues related to TC so I just go without it if at all possible... (then again, does Hi-8 even have TC?)

This should have nothing to do with "analog and vegas"

Sometimes when doing passthrough (i.e. like analog --> DVX --> Vegas), a screwy analog signal will mess up the camera, which will mess up Vegas.

My problem is bigger than I thought, now everything I try to capture is dropping. I clean the heads, don't know what it could be, ah man.. I'm screwed!

That's why I asked. Heh.

Just an update, I figured what I was doing wrong. In the preferences box, I selected Disc Difragment, and I had the capture going to 2 places, my primary hardrive and my secondary. I realize I had both checked and that confused the capturing process guess.

After messing around with a couple of different things, I realized this was the problem. Now I'm able to capture things perfectly, through my DVX & Hi-8. Thanks all for all your help.
