This might be possible and might have been discussed a zillion times on the forum but I haven't seen anything regarding it so I'll ask:

Can you shoot directly to a laptop with the HVX? If so, how is this done? Do I need any special software or any special adapter or anything?

I'm thinking about buying a used g4 laptop from my friend because I don't think I'll be able to afford a second P2 card.

Thanks,
Jay

You can with the Adobe OnLocation stuff, which used to be HDRack. I am pretty sure there is a similar product for mac...but cannot remember what it's called right now.

I shoot straight to my laptop with FCP all the time. very easy and then no need to import. Long record time. For a while before i got cards I even had my laptop in a bag recording with some app that turns off the sleep function when the top is closed.

Hey can you fill me in on how you set your laptop and FCP up in order to record directly into FCP? also I'm assuming you use firewire 800 right?

normal firewire 400 will also comfortably work,

just remember, the camera does not output any video to the firewire when shooting in any native mode,
