Hi,
i've read this elsewhere :

The problem is that you will not find a good-quality lavaliere microphone
without an XLR connector. The good microphones require phantom power and a
balanced line to avoid noise problems.

Is this quote true ?

Me, I would like to buy the smallest recorder possible and connect a great lavalier with it without losing quality. I would like to put the recorder in my pocket and have a wired rode lavalier in order to record my voice.

Solution 1) i can buy a pcmm10 and connect a rode lavalier into the 3.5mm input.
solution 2) i can buy a tascam dr100 and connect a rode lavalier in XLR

I wonder if i will lose quality to chose the 3.5mm instead of the XLR connection.
Does it worth it to go XLR or its not really significant..

Thanks,
Julien

That quote has merit but misses the mark in the real world. Most lavs can be had with XLR termination and run on phantom. But the same model lavs also come terminated for wireless transmitters and run on whatever power the transmitter provides and this is a common way to use a lav. Wired is better, but both are commonly used.

I can't say about the actual audio quality of the Sony compared to the Tascam, but the Tascam has more features and more manual controls, and the audio is plenty good enough for video. If you plan use other mics, you will really limit your choice of mics with the Sony without phantom. I have been pleased with my DR-100 for the price and it isn't that much more than the Sony.

Edit: The Tascam is a little large to put in your pocket and has buttons spread all over the case. Tascam has some mini-recorders that are really shirt pocket small also.
