"hero"

saw a bootleg of "Hero" last night, from the guys that did crouching tiger/hidden dragon.

the whole thing looked hypersaturated, like it was colorized in post to the point of looking like an oil painting. gorgeous.

to get this kind of look, does one need to rely on massive hours in post, while shooting nomally? or can you bump all the levels (chroma etc) and just do minor tweaking in post?

and speaking of post, what software would work best for this?

Re: "hero"

Well... i saw it too on my friend's computer (he has every p2p appl that was out starting with napster). Also Tarantino took part in the production is what i am hearing. He is becoming an action junkie, love. The imagery is beautiful, leafes, arrows, everything is very formal and balanced very well. The colors are indeed saturated and i would think if you can establish those settings in camera that would be the way to go. Everything native turns out better than post work. As a cinematography enthusiast i would definitely try my best to mess around gamma settings in order to achieve that look.  Post work is just that post work .. should not be relied on as a major factor in my opinion.  A good monitor is what i would rely on during shooting. Anyone know of any good ones?

Re: "hero"

Unless they changed it since it's original release, Tarantino did nothing with the production. He was executive producer in the American version, I believe, but only because he brought it over here.

I saw it last year, a friend of mine had the legitimate DVD (from Hong Kong). Simply beautiful cinematography!

Re: "hero"

yeah, i guess the copy i saw was ligit too, from HK.

some of the scenes, I was stunned by the colors and framing, not to mention the scale.

thanks for the comments, stepvision.

Re: "hero"

On the trailer it says "Quentim Tarantino presents".

I haven't eve seen it over her in the uk.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: "hero"

it says the same thing on iron monkey to right? and that was made sever years before tarantino ever had anything to do with it.

The version I have got doesn't have that. Probably it only says that on the US release, right?

All the best

Re: "hero"

No idea how they did filmed it, but that movie is the tits.

QT is listed as a producer because he's involved in the US distribution -- it's not as sexy if they say "US Distribution by QUENTIN TARANTINO."

Speaking of sex, does anyone buy that he's going out with Sofia Coppola? I thought QT was gay -- no straight man could have that much style.

Re: "hero"

Well, he is producer, technically, of the prints that we're seeing here in North America - if he paid for them, he's executive producer.

I hadn't heard about Sofia Coppola! Never woulda seen that coming...

Re: "hero"

She must have gotten him lost in translation.
I am insanely proud of Hero though and being the anti commercial film junkie that i am this is one of the films i would exclude from that list. Current listings at the movie theaters make me sea sick, when is this one coming out?
Looking forward looking far.
