Here's the 1st white paper from Canon on the C700

Global shutter, so I guess it can be done with CMOS sensors. I would not expect Canon to let that trickle down to its lower end products for a very long time.

Many CMOS image sensors have global shutter: Sony F55, Blackmagic 4K, and the AJA Cion. Not to mention several industrial cameras. It's just that their noise level is usually a couple stops higher than their rolling-shutter counterparts. Therefore also their dynamic range is a couple stops or so narrower. So most camera makers have held off on them. But the aforementioned Sony F55 has decent dynamic range (at least on paper, 14 stops or so (?)). And now also this Canon, with the global shutter, says it has 14 stops.
