Here's something technical to talk about

All of this HVX hype has me scrambling around with the question of should I or shouldn't I and it's driving me nuts. I love the DVX but wish the image was better and I see the HVX as being the answer. Sooooooooooo, if I decided to grab the HVX what equipment upgrades would I have to make?

I have a G5 dual 2gig but that's about it so what else would be needed? Obviously storage and maybe a better monitor?

The HVX really is a turbo-DVX. It's more of what you love about the DVX; more resolution, more framerates, more formats, more zoom, more wide-angle, more options. But all the DVX "goodness" is still there. Is it worth the upgrade cost? That's something only you can decide; selling a used DVX and buying a new HVX is gonna be, what, $2500 worth of upgrade? That's a lot of coin... for some of us it's a no-brainer. But if you're happy with where you're at, do you need to upgrade?

As to your other questions, I've got a G5 dual with 2 gigs of RAM, it works and I can even play back multiple streams of HD realtime off the internal hard disk, even with a transition between them. That's pretty cool. But I still think I'll pick up a G-Raid 500gb or so; they're cheap and fast and if I ever want to do direct capture of 100megabit data, that just seems like the way to go.

For a monitor, I'm using my Dell 2405, but I'm not thrilled with how I've done it. I'm using the 2405's DVI input for the PC, and using a VGA adapter cable for the Mac. So the Mac's picture looks pretty awful on the 2405, because of that VGA conversion. I'm thinking of getting another 2405 to dedicate just to the Mac.

(or is there any compelling reason to get the Apple monitor? Anyone know?)

Yeah. No. For $400, I can live with an ugly gray bezel! :)

I mean, does it work better with digital cinema preview or whatever that option is that I see in the menus? Is there any functional difference?

2405 has both better brightness and contrast... oh, and 1 extra inch :)
I'm happy with mine. Also using it with a Dual 2,5 G5.

Yeah I don't think there is a compelling reason to go with the Apple monitor - when it comes to both specs and price the Dell beats it out, as far as I know.

When I got my G5 I thought about getting the Apple 20" - I wound up getting 2 Dell 19" monitors for LESS than I would have gotten the single Apple 20" - and like xl70e3 pointed out, the Dell monitors have higher brightness and contrast ratio.

Barry, did you consider a DVI switch, such as:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817183304

More money again (that could of gone to a new monitor) but if desk space is crucial those things are quite good.
BUT BE CAREFUL: specs of resolutions are often deceiving, I believe that unit above is only 1280x1024 in digital, so make sure (if you go this way) to get one that supports the resolution you desire in DVI mode.
Also, if you wanted to run keyboard and mouse off a Mac you'd need a PS2 to USB cable (about 5 bucks).

Few months ago I invested in the G5 Dual Core... On my PC setup I'm using 2 Dell 1905FP's... Took one of those and connected to the G5...... Just wasn't pleased with the results and lack of screen space(used to double mon.) Had a little xtra cash so picked up the Apple 30" HD cin. display when the price dropped. Couldn't be more pleased with the detail, space, etc... this monitor has to offer.
Without a production monitor..e.g.. Sonys' PVM14M4U/2U these displays from Apple produces the best visuals for my edits in FCP.

.....and to think last summer I was a PC guy loving PP1.5

Just my opinion

lol...... Yea I know....... big coin, after checking it at Music Tec 2005 in NYC, I couldn't resist the invest.

Barry, I tried both VGA to DVI and then straight DVI. There really was only a slight difference. I did notice the Dell has to reset itself once when you first hook it up. Between the Dell screen menu and the Mac Display Preferences, you should be able to get it looking very good. You might have to reboot to get the Dell to take the hint.

Coffee,

I don't know where Apple is on supporting SATA, but I have the G-SATA, a little more expensive than the G-RAID but well worth it.

What I'm seeing is a ghosting/shadowing. It's the same kind of thing I used to see with my KVM switch, which is why I got rid of the KVM switch! :)

On the PC/DVI the display is incredibly sharp, every pixel is perfect. But from the Mac through the VGA cable it's kind of nasty and would drive one to the optometrist after a few hours.

Ok, so somehow the DVI connection is causing ghosting in the VGA connection? Yep, that would ruin my weekend.
