Ok, I'm sure home made light stands are all over the place, and hell mine probably suck, my idea may suck, and for all i know you can buy better light stands for 3$ a piece. I have pics and examples of my light stands in here tho, and I made 3 for 48$ total including PVC glue.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

PS: If you wanted truly variable sizing, you could get a piece of 1 1/4 pvc, drill height holes into it and a 1 1/2" host pipe on the support shaft, and slide it up and down from about 4 foot up to about 7 foot safely. I may do that portion for my next experiment.

In the future, I'd go with PVC Schedule 40 pressure fittings instead of the DWV fittings you have. (Thats DWV as in Drain Waste and Vent) You got the DWVs at the local Blowe's/Home Repot, but by going to a plumbing supply company---Ferguson Enterprises Xpress Counters are great!--you can get the Sched 40 pressure fittings.
Why? Well, first off the pressure fittings are better built, the 90 degree elbows are right angles, no curly-qing like the DWV, and they are much STRONGER. Plus, they have more glue area, the flanges are wider. They are designed to be used in pressure systems, liquid, gas, or steam...and are usually only about 10-15% more expensive.
Also, use the medium weight PVC glue, the kind that comes in the Green can by Oatey....holds better on high or cold temperatures. If you are using REALLY heavy light heads that get kind of hot, use the Heavy-Duty Oatey glue, comes in a grey can and is REALLY THICK and grey.

Oh, and for the sake of open disclosure, I used to be a sales rep at Ferguson Enterprises. Stocked and sold a few semi-loads of the pressure fittings...

go to the amvona.com stands in ebay. they will be cheap and they are true a hard stands.

Well for all 3 it was 48, so thats 18 a piece, but if you disclude the glue, which was 4, its 44 / 3 about 14.66 each. Are there stands cheaper? If so I'll buy em.

I built these a lot wider than I needed because I'd hoped my base mounting system would be a good start for a lightweight crane and or mic stand.

I second the Amvona comment... I got some stands on ebay from them... One of them was air cushioned, super heavy duty... I ended up getting it for $9 plus $12 shipping. A bit more expensive than ur pvc stands, but I tell you they are amazing for the price. you just have to bid on the right auction at the right time.
