Hey guys,

Damn... I'm pretty pissed off. My Maxtor external 250GB 5000XT Harddrive gave out on me yesterday morning which has 5 years worth of my demo reel and production stuff...as well as lots of unretrievable family/friend photos, etc. etc.
When I click the harddrive icon in "My Computer" in WindowsXP, a window pops up saying "J:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable."

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I called around to many data recovery places and it's so expensive...like $750-800 or so. It could be an easy fix. Also, this morning the harddrive started getting louder...it doens't sound healthy at all and I'm really getting scared.

Anyone...please help??

Thanks,

Norm

Before assuming that you need to go the data recovery route, you might want to investigate if it is the HDD or the external device in which the drive is contained that failed. Just pull the drive out and attach it to any computer with a compatible IDE interface (be certain that the drive assignment is acceptable for the interface that you connect to). Then you will be able to determine if it is the drive or the enclosure, and in my experience, it is just as often the external enclosure as a drive.

If you get lucky, I would strongly recommend that you back it up if the contents are irreplaceable (reliability by redundancy is a motto by which I live).

Oh shizzl...I use an External Maxtor to back my stuff up too!!

I use the Maxtor external OneTouch 2

if this thing dies on me..my life is over...all my music...fotos...videos....software documents..everything is sittin on it...omg..im scurd..i jus got it like 2 months ago to...AHH!!

How do those disk recoveries work? and who do you call? jus wondering...

You send someone a lot of money and then pray a lot.

Not the best plan of attack.

Blackhawk, just back everything up to DVD every chance you get. Everytime after I finish a project I export all the files out to DVD and just file them so I have a back up copy.

For the recovery of your harddrive, throw it in another computer and see what happens... From that point it comes down to bringing it into a place and telling them what happened... sometimes because you just blindly walk in they can get things pulled up, otherwise, yeah, large check with no guarantees of 100% recovery

Next chance I get...im running out to the nearest electronics store and buying madd DVDs!!

let the backing up begin....as soon as i fix my DVD burner.. :D

just wondering...how long did u have your drive for Norm?

I've had this problem before and at the time I downloaded a couple demo versions of the recovery software to see if the data was still there, and I had some good success verifying that it was, unfortunately I don't remember the names of the products but after all was said and done I ended up only having to repair some boot sector problems and was able to get the data off.

How did it turn out with your situation Norm?
