Help!!!

I'll be honest, you all almost convinced me, but I'd be curious to know what the other side has to say, are there any FCP(Mac) lovers out there?

You have to understand, you're in a Vegas thread with people who use and love Vegas. When it comes to software I am the farthest thing from a fanboy. I don't like Vegas because it is cool to use, makes me look more professional, or carries a price tag that says "I use Vegas, look at my massive manhood". I use Vegas because I shoot in 24p, and there is not a better piece of software available to edit 24p on. If Adobe or Apple came out with a piece of software that ran as smooth as Vegas, was as easy to use, and worked as fast, I would switch to that.

The bottom line for me is, and I think this is the case with most Vegas users, we get excited about Vegas because it does what we need it to do. If something else came out and did it better, we would switch. Vegas users aren't fanboys, use what works best. Otherwise you are going to get a mac and FCP and by the time you are done editing two scenes and rendering it out to watch it, I will have half the film cut.

The cost issue of PCs, well there is no doubt there. I run a $500 Dell and have never had lag issues with Vegas.

I have a question, I'm looking at B&H right now, which Vegas would be best for me, Vegas 6 or Vegas+DVD? There's like a $300 difference. Don't Vegas 6 give you an option to burn your work to DVD?

No.

Getting Vegas+DVD gives you two very important things.

You get a very powerful DVD authoring/burning app.

And you get the Dolby Digital encoder.

The DD encoder by itself runs almost $300.

But look around -- you can no doubt find it for less.

The DVD is DVD Architect. It is an incredible program to create very deep multi menu DVDs. I think it is worth the purchase price. You can use any DVD writing program and just use Vegas, but it depends upon your specific needs as to whether DVDA is best for you.

I personally will only use DVDA because I like menus that have tons of options and it simplifies things for me.

I can't live without DVD Architect. Beautiful program. I think it could use a couple more features, but it really adds that extra something to all my finished products.

On another note, let me do a breakdown for you about the same situation I was considering
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Choice 1
Apple G-5 2.3 Ghz $2500
Final Cut Studio $1299

Total $3799

Just Final Cut $999

And I can't play any of my video games

Choice 2
Custom Dual Core Athlon 2.2 Ghz $2000
Vegas+DVD $579

Total $2579

Just Vegas $379
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's just say I have an extra $1220 in my pocket. Am I any less capable than if I spent that extra money. HELL NO!! Seriously, don't fall into any hype. If you currently have a PC, try out Vegas. Then take it from there.

I've used just about every single major editing program out there and as far as simplicity, reliability and quickness go, I give Vegas the edge by far.

Good day.

I'm going, thanks alot Fellas, let me just go on the FCP thread and check out some of the comments on there. But I'm glad I started this little thread, u guys saved me alot of money. I just always thought FCP did amazing stuff that no other editing software could do, but if Vegas can edit my movie with a professional feel to it and save me a load of cash at the same time, then there's really no question about my choice. I just hope there isn't a group like you guys on the FCP thread with convincing words of wisdom, then I'M F@$%,

From what I gather from reading the FCP forums here and on other sites . . .

1) FCP doesn't handle 24p well. Brian Wells covered that nicely here.

2) FCP only edits Quicktimes. (Vegas can edit any file format, and will edit them happily all lumped together on the same timeline. Something new comes along? Just get the codec and Vegas is happy.)

3) FCP doesn't have near the sound tools and will not mix/edit/export 5.1 surround files.

4) According to FCP afficionados like ullanta, FCP gets iffy if you try to run it on an older machine. Certain most-used 24p pulldown schemes, for example, are not availabe if the machine is too slow.

5) I've read recently (from ScottDVX) that FCP doesn't do chroma key well, which leads me to wonder about the rest of its VFX capabilites.

I list these things because these are all things which Vegas does with aplomb. For a lot less money.

I saw Loki said that the biggest thing he likes is that with FCP, you can do everything 10 different ways. Same with Vegas.

I know there are people who love the Mac, want to work in that environment, and will not have it any other way. In that case, Vegas is not for them. However, if you're not in that camp, I can't imagine why you'd choose FCP over Vegas, ESPECIALLY when you're working with 24p.

I simply can't. Except for native support for DVCPRO, which you don't need to worry about with the DVX, I don't see a thing which FCP has over Vegas, and if there are a few things, I don't see how they'd overcome the pitfalls.

Thanks for the rundown David, I'm ording my Vegas Friday. WOW, you guys have no idea how much money you saved me. I'm glad I posted this thread.
