i understand it doesn't take a degree to become a director. but, since i am in college going for a degree, might as well choose one that will be somewhat of a benefit to me. my goal is to become a working commercial director.

the 2 majors that i am considering are communications design & radiotv&film.

i chose the communications design so i could possibly work w/ an ad agency, all while building up a spec spot reel. and i understand that lots of art directors make the change into commercial directing. and if i knew how to direct and shoot, that would be a major plus. and besides, i would be in contact w/ some exec. producers of production companies that i could build a working relationship with.

the reason i chose radiotv&film is b/c i would be around other aspiring directors. also, i would be able to work with different formats of film/video.

any advice for me?

I'm in the same boat you're in. I decided to double major in both of those fields.

It's really time-pressing, but is going to be well worth it once you get out into the real world.

Communication is what is going to ultimately get you the job, the radio/film is going to give you the skill for that job. The two together are a great combination.

What school are you going to and what year are you?

right now, im at a junior college. after this semester i will have my associate of arts, and then im transferring to univ of north texas. how about you?

Well, I just finished my freshman year at Purdue. They don't have the biggest film/production department, but they're getting there. Their communication department is quite well known though. I believe I am going to film school after college just to gain extra knowledge... but I may not need to... depends on what happens in the next 3 years :)

Ultimately, I'd like to direct features, but I'd like to get as much field experience as possible before i get into that career.

I'm okay with starting out doing commercials and music videos. I've got my own show right now for campus TV, but I decided on saving up episodes, rather than airing one epsiode randomly here and there.

I've got a dvx of my own, and access to some... sony broadcast cams, canon gl2's and xl1s's but I don't and haven't used those except for helping with other people's work.

There are plenty of projects to keep me busy... the funny thing is, most of my income has come from graphic work, rather than filming. I'm still doing freelance stuff though, doing side jobs, events, and a commercial here and there.

The truth is, I'm pretty much willing to work for free as long as I can get some experience.
