Help!

Was wondering how do I apply an effect to the last 3 seconds of a flim clip as an editing technique. I can apply the effect to the whole clip with no problem, but cant seem how to apply it only to the last three seconds of footage.

Would really appreciate any help, to what is probably a quick fix to a noob question.

Re: Help!

You can't keyframe it out until you want it to show up? In the keyframe tool, use your up/down arrow buttons to zoom in on that last 3 seconds.
You could also split out that three seconds to save a teeny bit of render time, applying the effect to the split clip only.

If you are trying to affect a global, where all video tracks are effected for the last 3 seconds, drop the effect on the preview window. This will act as a master effect.

Re: Help!

Hi Thistle

What I like to do is:

Select the region you want to apply the effect to by using the SELECTION BAR. It is always a good idea to EXPAND the track so you can nai down precisley where it is that the FX needs to be applied.

Then, I hit 'S' to split it. You will see after you do this that there are 2 icons now in this SPLIT selection. The top one is PAN and CROP and the one below that is TRACK EFFECTS (a green square with 2 circles on either side).

Select the TRACK EFFECTS and apply your effect. Inside the FX wondow you will see the KEYFRAME tool bar. You must use the keyframes to apply the effects; first key frame, next keyframe, last keyframe, etc.

Hope this helps!

Cool. This part I actually think I might understand. Although I'm wondering if say I use this method on a few single clips. Render them. And then when I go to edit, use the clips that I've rendered a second time (rendering them again when I edit everything togeather) do I lose quality?

Was also wondering about what you said about Keyframing. When I go inside the FX wondow I do see the keyframe tool bar, but I don't understand how to use it. I don't understand what you ment either by selecting first, next and last keyframe? Do I always pick atleast 3 keyframes then or is every frame between the first and last keyframe always included in the keyframes that you told me that I must use to apply the effects to? oh oh.... Head is spinning again. ::)

Re: Help!

There are many ways in Vegas to EXPAND the TRACK. I personally use the WHEEL on the mouse.

You can also select this option:

And for Tacos and Corona you have a deal.

Re: Help!

I would not Render until it was time to do an actual render. You can do 'Pre-rendering' to say, see how an effect is going to play out but I personally wait until its all ready to go. (FYI Like all software programs, save and save often by selecting the little floppy disc at the top or shortcut Ctrl + 5)

You don't have to select every Keyframe option. I was just illustrating the options.

Here is what I do:

1. I use the Selection Bar.

I want to find exactly where to start my effect or EVENT. I click on approximately where it is I think I need it and then EXPAND the track using my Mouse Wheel. I then use the arrow keys to fine tune my exact spot in the frame.

Then I Close the track back up for visual purposes; again using the mouse wheel for convenience.

By Click/Holding and dragging to the spot I want the effect end. Again, when I think I have found it, I EXPAND the track again to FINE TUNE the exact spot.

Now the selection bar is where I need it. I then hit 'S' to Split the track (personal preference).

Apply the Effect you want. As you can see the Window pops up along with the Keyframes. At this point I have already Closed the TRack back up with a quick roll of the Mouse Wheel (personal preference).

You will notice a little ORANGE line in the KEYFRANE window. The very begenning is where you will see a small grey diamond. This mark is the VERY START of the frame you chose to start your effect. (The deal with SPLITTING is that the start is the start of the SPLIT and not the START of the ENTIRE track.

Youll notice if you drag the ORANGE line back and forth the Line at the top (On your tracks) will move with it and visa versa.

Since you have SPLIT the tracks and applied the effect, you will now need to CREATE KEYFRAMES. First, manipulate the EFFECt how you want it start off (since you are at the START of your Effect in the timeline)...

After that, move the line until the spot you want to the effect to END (or begin, its a matter of what you are doing :P ).

Alter your effect (EVENT) how you want it and then hit CREATE KEYFRAME.

You will notice the KF's are movable. This is for fine tuning.

I hope this helps, Im not the expert and not the best at exaplaining! This is just one example as its a whole new ballgame with Pan and Crop or Effects that MOVE AROUND or or or....

Basically, anytime you change the effect on the time line it will create a keyframe.

Okay, now my heads spiingin!
