Help with Vegas

Sorry to bother with what are certainly newbie questions.

I just got my Dvx and yesterday quickly filmed a few shots and now I wish to capture them into Vegas so that I can edit and save them to CD.

I shot the video with all default settings except for switching to f5 (24p).

I am able to capture the video using Vegas, but am very UNSURE as to what setting to use to capture it ?

Is it auto selected for me, or do I need to tell Vegas to capture it in a certain mode to keep the Best Quality and to have it captured in a mode that is proper for both editing and later Exporting that image to disk.

(Also, if I save my video clips to CD, and then later export them back into Vegas for Editing or Re-editing, will I lose quality in image ?)

Thanks for any and all help that anyone would give me concerning the BASICS of proper Video Capturing and Rendering.

(sorry again for the newbie questions, I'm just very eager to be able to post a few screen grabs or maybe even a 1 min flick if I get the courage up.) :(

Re: Help with Vegas

There's nothing to worry about during capture: Vegas will automatically capture it at the best quality, preserving the 24P flags, etc. All you do is click "capture video"...

Re: Help with Vegas

Thanks much Barry !!!

If I store the clips on CD's will I lose video or audio quality on them when I later copy them back to the computer for Editing ?

Re: Help with Vegas

No. It's data like any other kind of file . . . Word, Excel, whatever. As long as you get all the data back, it's exactly the same.

Thanks David !

What storage do most of you guys use to keep your clips ?

Hard drive ? CD ? DVD ?

You might find one of the nearly 1000 Vegas resources at the "All Things Vegas" site to be useful if you've not been there. No forums there of course, but everything else.

Re: Help with Vegas

yo, bop...try these settings in Vegas to create a QuickTime file:

File: Render as
File Name: Whateve you want it to be
Save Type As: QuickTime 6 (*.mov)
Click the Custom button
Project Tab
Video rendering quality - Best
Video Tab
Frame Size - Choose custom or choose a preset
Field Order - None (progressive) - if progressice source footage
Pixel Aspect Ratio - will depend on the Frame size (I believe)
Video Format - Sorenson 3 or MPEG 4 -Video
Compression Depth - 32BPP Color
Quality bar - around 60
Audio Tab
Audio Format - IMA 4:1 (this is a presonal preference, and I'm sure others cna recommend something else. The point is to compress audio with something)
Sample rate - I bring it down into the 16,000 - 22,255 Hz range, but again it is personal preference
Bit depth - 16
Channels - mono
Streaming Tab
Check "Prepare for Streaming"
Choose Fast Start

You may get some better suggestions if folks chime in, but this has worked pretty good for me, and the file size / quality ratio is good.

Woah....
Thanks for the great step by step explanation Tuffgong !!!

I'm gonna give it a shot this weekend.

Thanks for taking the time to lay it out, in such an easy way to follow. :D
