Help with trapcode particular

I'm trying to make a stupid GIF as a joke for a friend. In my comp I have a picture, and an animated shape layer. It's sort of a green mile effect, like how he spits out all the evil. Last night, it was working just fine! But AE crashed and I wasn't able to save it. So this morning I got up and figured I could do it again with no problem. Well, when I apply the effect, if I apply it to the picture, it just covers the whole picture with black, then the flying particles. If i put it on the shape layer, the resize option goes away? I need to resize it. It's driving me crazy because I know it's something so simple I'm just looking over.

Any help?
 
I feel like I tried that and got the same thing, the black (or whatever color solid i picked) with the particles only. Which is why I'm frustrated because I know I've gotten around that before!
