Help with time/frames please.

Hello,
I have what seems to be a basic question, but I can't get it for some reason.

Putting 60i footage in a 24p timeline will slow it down (in half I guess) to get true slow motion right? How is this done? (in Vegas). In the properties menu I change the timeline sometimes, but never really see a difference.

For instance, Rich Lee posted this in the Screen Grabs section about an 80's cheese rock band for which he is filming a video:

"I used RE: fields kit to take 60i footage and turn it into 30p, then interpreted the footage as 24p in a 24p timeline. there is some 24p footage mixed in as well."

I don't really get what that means. Thanks in advance with any help. Tim.

Re: Help with time/frames please.

To get slow motion, you take the 60i footage and slow it down to 40%.

If you think about it, 24 is 40% of 60, so if you slow 60i footage down to 40%, you get one field per frame on the timeline. Vegas will interpolate the rest of the frame out of the field, so you will lose half the veritcal resolution, but you will get the smoothest slow motion possible.

Re: Help with time/frames please.

The usual methods of doing slo-mo in Vegas are:

>Ctrl/Drag the left/right event edge.

>Use a Velocity envelope.

Will those work for you?

Re: Help with time/frames please.

David, Are you talking about using a velocity envelope to slow the clip down 40%?

Gary, I have used the velocity envelopes, and the ctrl/drag to get slo mo. I just thought that maybe it wasn't true slo mo. Is it?

Also, what is the difference when I change the frame rate in the project properties menu? 29.97 or 24.00? Which should I be using? Thanks so much for the help. Tim.

Re: Help with time/frames please.

If you want to edit in 24p, use the 24p template – it has the all the settings you need. The frame rate is actually 23.976.

I’m not sure what you mean by “true” slo-mo. Slo-mo is always achieved by playing back a clip at a slower frame rate than that in which it was recorded. This is true of both video and film.

When you slow 60i to 40%, as I mentioned above, you’re slowing it down to 24 fields per second, where it’s normally 60 fields per second. Because each field is cleanly separated, you won’t get “truer” or smoother slo-mo than that.

It would be nice to be able to “overcrank” the DVX to very high frame rates for good, smooth, progressive slo-mo, but alas, that’s beyond the scope (and price point) of the cam.

Re: Help with time/frames please.

Thanks David,
I don't know if I've heard the term "true" slo mo or not, I thought I heard/it in Barry's book or dvd. Maybe not. Last question, I hope: If I drop 60i footage in a 24p timeline, it will automatically slow the clip down 40%?
