Help with Project - Syncing footage

Hi guys

I'm going to be filming a gig at the end of the month using my HVX and 2 Sony HD handycams (not the best mix i know but it has do unfortunately) and wanted to know the best the way of getting the footage synced up in FCP. (Audio will be recorded through logic)

I've done some tests and so far this is how i'm doing it;

import footage into FCP
Import audio and put in timline (then lock down audio)
put footage (not audio) into timeline and line up with a clacker/audio snap etc
export that sequence as a mov file
do the same for the rest of the footage
re-import all footage now with the recorded audio
Edit away!

Does this make sense? Are there any shortcuts/other workflows which you guys know?

Also if anyone has any advice for low light settings that would be great.

Thanks! :dankk2:

1st things 1st!!! Keep them all the same frame rate 60i, 24p, etc.

Next, clapper works good, but try to do as many as you can throughout the night. (Unless you have a TBC, you'll probably have some TC slip throughout the night.)

You can also use a camera flash, which might be less intrusive if you're some place w/ a crowd. Once all your cameras are matched up, bring up the audio a tad on one camera & it will be pretty easy to sync up the audio from Logic.

Also see if you can sync up any free-run time code. I have done this w/ a Sony Z1 & Z7.

Or try to set TC to time of day, & at least all the TC will be in the same ball park w/ each camera.

You can combine video and audio which has been recorded separately into "Merged Clips". This will save you from having to export and re-import synched up clips. The individual clips themselves still stay separate on your hard drive, but act as one clip in Final Cut Pro.

Read more about it in your manual, the chapter is "Merging Clips from Dual System Video and Audio".
