Help with Mixing Audio (music)

I just produced a song using SOUNDTRACK. Now when I first started arranging the song everthing was in the red! Thats cool because I wasnt mixing at that time. Now that I have been mixing the song, I got the levels out of the red. Everything sounds good in my headphones and sounds just as good on my studio monitors. Now whats strange to me, is that the song or should I say several of my songs sound different in the car. Some songs I have to crank up just to hear certain things. Other songs might have to much bass, etc. However in SOUNDTRACK my levels are not in the red but high enough without it peaking.

So Should I set my MASTER at 0 and keep it there and adjust the levels of the individual tracks. I did a little of both, I adjusted the master after I was done with the mix. I should also add that I have added effects such as COMPRESSOR, PHASER, and I think FLANGER to the mix.

I am just wondering why some songs sound one way in one location and different in other locations such as the car. I like to listen to the songs I produced as I am driving since I use the music for various projects I work on.

I could listen to a downloaded song that is on my ipod in my headphones and it will sound exactly the same in my car.

Re: Help with Mixing Audio (music)

First of all, what kind of monitors are you using to mix? Speakers that is. Monitoring your audio on cheap speakers are for sure going to give you different mixes. You need speakers with a flat response. Second, don't try doing a audio mix down on headphones. Mixing down good audio can be a challenge when you aint got the right hardware. If you don't mind, i would like to listen to what it was that you mixed?

Re: Help with Mixing Audio (music)

I am using Behringer Truth B2031 Monitor Speakers. My brother is a producer and he's listened to the speakers before and likes the sound they produce. So I know they are good. I was going to get the Mackies but for what I am trying to do the Behringers do the job. How do I go about uploading a music file to you?

Re: Help with Mixing Audio (music)

The first think I would do is make a series of test recordings making sure that EVERYTHING is exactly the same - No effects at all. Make a CD of those test recordings and play them in the car and see if you have the same results.

Re: Help with Mixing Audio (music)

After speaking to my brother who is a producer he gave me some few tips over the phone that I was able to go back and mix the song over again from scratch. I am going to export this version to my ipod and play it in the car to see if it sounds any better. It should since I spent half of the night mixing it over!

Re: Help with Mixing Audio (music)

I would still run that test. That should tell you if the problem is equipment related or technician created...

Best,

Matt
