Help with exposure for a time-lapse shot

Hi, i was wondering if anyone could give me advise:
i am shooting on a bridge facing the east during sunrise. there will be a stationary figure in the foreground, but the focus is on the view over the bridge. The footage will be sped up so the figure will be watching the sun rise very quickly.
What is the best way to monitor the exposure and white balance? i could switch it to automatic, but am not sure how subtle or gradual that would be. however, with manual adjustments, would it be more obvious? could this be smoothed out in post, or frames dropped?
Any suggestions about shooting shifting sunlight over an extended period of time?

I would set the exposure and white balance for the final frame. Let the sunlight and color temp come up to the image you want. Trouble is, you have to set that ahead of time, but oh well...

I think the auto-iris might work. I cringe at the thought, but I'd think that for the most part, the camera would adjust in between shots and if there were any auto-iris adjustments while the camera was actually recording they could be taken out. With the white balance, I think you'd wanna bias it warm so the sun would come out of the blue as the sun rises. Never done it, but it seems like it'd work.

There you go!

Two completely different approaches to the same problem. Either one or both might work. Let us know what you do and please post some pics!
