Help with export using avidDVcodec

I've been trying to render out a clip using the Avid DV compressor but I only seem to get a gray frame with rivets.

Here's a link to the frame of the render:

I've tried using all combinations of rendering RGB,million colors, premultiplied.

The clip is exported from Avid 3.5 using the Avid DV compressor -- and that works fine but --
Any ideas why I can't render out a clip from AE 6.0 using the Avid DV compressor ?

--- (pardon the cross posting on the AVID forum)

Thanks !

Hi sanchez. I can't get the frame you posted to work, I'm getting an "Unknown Codec" type of error. I can't find the codec when directed to the quicktime page.

Is the Avid DV codec the only one you are able to use? Can you not render out uncompressed or with a lossless compressor?

One of the the things AE will throw fits at is if you are trying to use a codec that want's specific frame sizes & rates. Microsoft's DV compressor for instance will give an error if your render is anything other than 720x480 .9 Apsect ratio, 29.97 fps.

You should try the exporting with no codec, with the Animation Codec from Quicktime, or even if a .png sequence if all else fails.

Thanks Rapier for the advice --- "Let's go 'eers" class '02 btw --- (edit) '92, dang wish I were that young again !

Anyway, I think you need the Avid DV codec on your computer to view the file ...

I was hoping to avoid a re-compression step upon import in Avid.

Yes, I can export from AE with the other QT codecs that I have installed --

my work around is your advice -- using "none" or "animation" -- it's just the files are huge -- but if it maintains the quality, I can live with the slowness for now.

Good ol'e WVU. Ahh memories . . .

If size is an issue, yes those codecs (or lack of them) are gonna be huge, but for no loss of quality and compatability, sometimes that's a bitter brew you gotta swallow. I have had to use Nero's backup options on projects before in excess of 50 gigs, just to keep everything in tact and safe. But I know 5 years from now, they will be pristine if I need them.

But a .png sequence can be suprisingly small. I'de like to shake the hand of the guy who came up with that compression, and folks here who put me on to it. It has saved my butt more than once. Plus, you can export at any frame size, and fps isn't really a matter since it will be the job of Avid to interpret them, and you should be able to set that up as you please.

I've always found image sequences to be better to render out of AE, or anything for that matter, until final output. The only times I export a QT is for client reviews/dailies, and web/DVD output. Otherwise it's all .IFF, TIFF, and PNG for me!

mee too.
targa and tiff. I never use QT. (QT has not been too compatible with windows, since than I have been not using it)

sounds good to me --- the avid DV codec is 'dead to me' then --- I'll be trying out the .png, .tga and .tiff -- haven't heard of .iff compression but what the heck I'll give it a try too.

thanks everyone for the tips
