Help with editing 24p Advanced footage in 2026

Hey everyone, I'm currently trying to shoot a movie on my Panasonic AG-DVX100B in 24p Advanced mode and I'm running into some issues when editing the footage in Premiere Pro. I'm having to convert the footage to a MOV file using shutter encoder because modern day Premiere doesn't support AVI (although the footage still retains the DV codec) When I put the 24pA footage into a 23.976 timeline, sometimes premiere auto detects and removes the pulldown (leaving me with smooth motion footage) and other times it doesn't (leaving me with jerky footage) and I can't figure out for the life of me why. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated as I've been tearing my hair out.

My current workflow is:

DVX100B in 24p Advanced mode captured on a compact flash over Firewire using the Sony HVR-MRC1.

Compact flash to my Macbook, then using Shutter encoder to convert AVI to MOV (it comes out as 29.97i)

Then putting the footage into a 23.976 Progressive timeline where sometimes it looks beautiful and sometimes it looks choppy.

Only thing I can offer (which means remember, haha) is:

(1) Make sure the conversion process is exactly the same (double-check, triple-check settings).
(2) Sometimes some of us in the past bought older computers with older software on eBay to have better workflows with these older cameras.
(3) Make sure you don't think any fast panning footage is choppy as it's supposed to be if the panning is too fast (or there's too much wild handheld).
(4) Over the years, the newer versions of NLEs lost a lot of compatibility (as you know) after lots of building and rebuilding/coding, and it could be that they just aren't play well with older formats consistently.

It sounds like your conversion through Shutter may be inconsistent - with the caveat that I don't know exactly what the MRC1 is doing to the video while capturing. I assume it's just capturing exactly what the DVX sends it and wrapping it in AVI, though.

PPro should be able to detect and remove pulldown from 24pA footage with proper pulldown flags embedded in the footage. It's possible Shutter isn't retaining those flags consistently when you convert, as it appears PPro successfully removes pulldown for some clips but not others.
