Help with converting file formats

Help! I'm frantically trying to finish this project.

I have a DVD from another project that I want to bring into FCP.
I pulled it off of the DVD to MPEG4 using Streamclip.
However, FCP wouldn't recognize the MPEG4 file so I ran it
through Compressor - now FCP likes it but Compressor changed
it from 640x480 to 320x240. SAme thing if I convert to QT MOV format.

What am I doing wrong? What tools should I be using?

What are you editing in? DV/NTSC, DV50, uncompressed?

I haven't used Streamclip that much (and don't have it in front of me), but as I recall it can transcribe the MPEG on the DVD into a .mov file that's appropriate to what you're editing in.

You should only have to be doing one transcoding (in Streamclip). Then it should drop into the timeline just fine.
 
I'm using DV/NTSC. I found a product called DVDxDV that converted my DVD to
.MOV file and kept the same resolution. It reads into FCP OK. For $25 probably worth it.

I just haven't had time to look into it, though, but images get stretched vertically and the resolution seems poor once in DVD Studio.. I just haven't had time to look into why that, is, though.

Awful lot to learn!

It'll do lots of different conversions for you. I have DVD material I wanted to use in FCP once. Used ffmpegx to convert and all that. Works very well.
 
I tried handbrake. However, when I try to drag it into FCP it gives me an error "Unknown file type". If I run it through Compressor it works, but changes the format of the file. Should I use Handbrake to convert it to AVI?
 
I also lose alot of picture quality. If I compare the image displayed from the DVD image as compared to the MOV or MPEG4 it clearly is a poor conversion. I thought MPEG4 was supposed to be better than this or am I using the wrong settings or converter?

Correction: The mp4 file I get out of Handbrake looks good, I just can't get FCP to read it without going through Compressor. The MOV file out of DVDxDV drops quality.
