Help with audio

Hi all. I can't get audio on the hvx when I use an external mic likea lavalier or the rode video mic. I use a 1/4" female to male adapter connected to an xlr adapter, but I get no audio. I know the mics work properly if I connect them to another cam with mini plug inputs. First I thought my adapters could be the problem so I went to a musical store and tried brand new adapters straight from the box but still no audio. What I'm I missing? I've tried to change the camera mic settings but zip.
Could some one please tell me what I could be doing wrong or why the cam xlr inputs won't work.

Do you have the xlr inputs on the front of the camera switched to mic?
Do you have the input select switches, on the side of the camera behind the LCD, set to input 1 & 2?
Does the mic need phantom power?
