help with audio problem

hi guys,
i just need some help with an audio problem i noticed in one of my friends recent films. Let me explain....

He was limited to 1 dvx100a so for every scene, they had to shoot it a couple of times in order for them to have multiple angles. For audio they had a boom mic that one of them held.
because of this, everytime during the scene that the camera angle changed, there was a difference in audio. And im talking a MAJOR difference that i believe, lowered the films quality a notch.

Now my question is this. I will be shooting my own short film very shortly using 1 dvx100a and was wondering the best way to make the audio as normal as it can be while changing the camera angle

Re: help with audio problem

Don't understand what the problem is. If the audio was done with a boom then usually the boom operator should try to keep the capture angles the same. Only the camera should be moving and changing and not the mic placement. I understand the person operating the boom would have to move in order to not be in the shot, but the mic still be in the same spot. Maybe what you could do next time is to use a Lav or 2.

Re: help with audio problem

I would have to agree that the problem is most likely with the boom operator.  It's trickier to do well than most people think.  They should know the script well enough to know when to angle the mic towards the actor, as well as be able to keep a consistent distance between the mic and actor through multiple takes.  My guess is that there was a difference in either the angle or the distance of the mic to the actor in the different shots.  That can affect the sound quality immensely.
The good news is that a little practice can make a huge difference.  Most films are shot with a boom mic, and they have bajillion dollar budgets.  It is usually the mosst effective way to get dialogue.

Re: help with audio problem

ok. that probablt the most obvious reason that i didnt even think of. Thanks for helping. I'm guessing the problem with his was that he moved the mic every shot. Thanks

Re: help with audio problem

Many things can cause inconsistent audio. What was the nature of fluctuation? You need to have control of your shooting environment and as ian said the mic placement should be consistent.

This book by Jay Rose has help many first timers....

Good luck.

PS-best way to get good audio is to hire professional ;)

Re: help with audio problem

It's all about the boom op. Get a good boom operator, and you'll be good.
