HELP with 24p capture from DVX100B

Hi there,

The more I search previous threads and Google the Web, the more confused I get. So I'm REALLY hoping someone can help me out with this.

I shot a short film in 24p (not PA) using a DVX100B. I edited it in FCP 5, but when I play the video on TV, it has a very jerky/stroby quality. (Also on the computer monitor, but not as noticeable.)

I'm wondering if I goofed on my capture and/or sequence settings, and what I might be able to do to fix it.

I captured using the standard NTSC easy capture (29.97 fps) but used the 23.98 fps for the sequence setting (see the image below.)

Did I screw up? Any suggestions on how to salvage the project?

Any help EXTREMELY appreciated.

Cheers,
Kevin

Here's my settings:

Yes... you 'screwed' up.

Why would you capture using one frame rate and edit in another? Didn't you have to render everything?

You should have edited in the same rate as the captured material. Remember, 24p is a film 'look' -- same technique broadcasters for years have used to put film on broadcast tv... they add a cadence to the 24 to make it 30.

Edit it again using the 29.97 timeline.

You MIGHT be able to 'fix' it by trashing your renders (use render manager) and then copying the clips out of one sequence and into the other. Not sure if that will work.

Thanks, Capt.

I know, it seemed non-intuitive to me to have different settings. Can't quite recall the reasoning behind it, but it seemed to make sense at the time I set up the sequence ... guess I better order Noah's DVD right quick.

Copying the clips to a new sequence worked, btw. There are a few small glitches (audio levels reset, some clips are a frame too long, some a frame too short), but will be fine with some tinkering.

Thanks much!
