Help -- what to do when asked stupid questions

Hey --

I've been asked to bring this to life:

http://www.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-060228-054.pdf

Namely, page 1 and the timeline around page 10-15.

They want to replace footage for the stills... I've got that. I've got all the logos. I'll find a good text...

They want it sexy

and

They want in two weeks.

Should I call out to the pros? How much you think this would cost for 30 seconds.

Should I do it in After Effects, Shake or someother NLE?

I'm thinking AE...

Help?

Capt (I'm just a freakin BAND dude!) M

Where's the stupid question?

Not knowing your level of skill, I can't tell you whether or not to farm it out. If you're good, do it in whatever tool you know best, which for me is AE, but that looks like a good candidate for a Shake artist.

I don't think two weeks is that unreasonable. Bid high if you think so.

Definitely looks like an After Effects job to me. Shake would probably be overkill on something like this. Lots of blending modes, masking, pretty light tricks, etc and you're in bidness my friend.

Considering your client is the US Government, I don't think you should worry about price too much. I'm sure they will pay a reasonable rate as long as the job gets done in time (which seems like the kicker).

How are the elements being provided to you? Photoshop files, images, etc...?

Well let me set the record straight just a bit:

My skill is slightly better than amature at best. I know AE enough to get this done but it will take a good deal of time I don't have AND:

1) My work as a hobby has been requested by my AF 'bosses' way too often. This is why I say it's a stupid question... Hey Capt, will you do this as the intro video for the video you made us last time? The 4-star's gonna see it this time.

2) Budget IS a big deal in this GWOT spending AF. $2,500 for a simple thing like this is lots of money... especially when I do my work for free for them. Plus, without going through the whole GSA availability contracting thing, that's all I can pay to a single vendor.

3) Video is raw stuff on DVCam and BetaSP. Logos are tiff and almost whatever you want... vector or non. Whoever does this must come up with the sexy digital juice type graphic thingies.

AE is the perfect tool for that job and it doesn't seem too hard. Two weeks is easily doable, if you already have all the graphics.
