I suggested the AT lav because it's cheap and the OP mentioned that he can't afford mics. Even a cheap lav will beat recording from afar, especially in a noisy place. Plus, doesn't the DR40 have combo jacks? Not optimal but TRS to 1/4" adapter's work and are cheap.

WOW! The Tascam sounds great! In combination with the windscreen, This is exactly what I was needing for a long time. It absolutely blows me away that the sound clarity can be so awesome even at long range! Overall Great buy!
