Help - What´s wrong with my FP24?

I got my first mixer off of ebay but there seems to be something wrong with it. It`s a Shure FP24 which to my knowledge is identical to the Sound Devices Mixpre and besides the fact that it shows some signs of use and seem to have been dropped there are two things that are strange:
1. When I first put fresh batteries in, it didn`t turn on. I unscrewed the battery cap and put it back on - and everything worked fine. But then after I hadn`t used it for an hour or so the same thing happened again. It did turn on only after I opend the battery compartment and closed it again. Same thing this morning... Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong?
2. The headphone out seem very hissy - is that normal?
I have to decide if I keep it or send it back. So quick help would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matthias

Are you using rechargeable batteries by any chance? The first generation MixPre's and I imagine the Shure's also have a spring design that works great, unless you use NiMH batteries. Those batteries don't have an all metal top and the spring is designed to "capture" the button on the end of the battery and so doesn't always make good contact with batteries with out all metal tops. SD will replace the spring for free is you send it in, I imagine Shure would do the same. I keep waiting for enough of a break to send mine in. In the mean time I use Alkiline.

I haven't noticed the headphone being particularly noisey, but I rarely use it (I'm monitoring from the recorders headphone jack).

Bingo, that seem to be it. I also somewhat cleaned the contacts and that seem to help too. Thanks a lot.

Because it's a shure, I'm not sure (no pun intended) if SD will look at it, but give them a call and ask them to do a thorough check on it and tune it as necessary. I had a couple of little problems with my 302 when I first got it (used) and SD took care of the problems for free.
