help. video frames freezing and jumping

A friend gave me some footage to edit together for him. The video clips were transferred from a thumb drive to my computer. They were in a quicktime format. I'm using CS3 to edit. I loaded up the project as a widesceen dv project and when I import the footage, the audio from the clips are accurate but the video freezes up and jumps along skipping frames. I've always edited footage that I've captured myself and never had problems. Obviously there is some kind of setting adjustment that needs to be made but I'm not sure what. I'm sure this is nothing new to those of you who have been at this a while, so any info will help. thanks.

Could be a field order problem. Try interpreting the footage as lower field or top field first

More importantly, what type is the footage ? "quicktime" doesn't convey much useful information - it just tells you that it's .mov wrapped

It says that it has a frame rate of 59.96. Quicktime Movie. 1280x720. Average Data Rate: 582KB. Pixel Aspect ratio: 1.0 (1.0). Compressor = Ambrella AVC encoder. I don't know what else to give you. I tried interpreting the footage and i don't see where I can choose lower or top field first.
