Help Vegas 5 Crashing!

I have been a Vegas user since the Sonic Foundry days. I have had ZERO problems up until a couple of days ago. The program launches just fine. When I try to open a veg file.... bang - my whole system re-boots. I'm not talking lock up... The systems totally re-boots. Other programs run just fine (DVDA, CD Architect, etc.) It's only Vegas that is affected. I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I hesitated to upgrade with SP2 as I have read about some problems with it. I've had it for a couple of months and haven't had any problems. I did a system restore to about a week ago, but the problem is still there. Right now I'm screwed, I've got deadlines, and no Vegas. Has anyone experienced anything like this? My version of Vegas is 5.0d. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm under the gun.

It could be a BSOD or stop error and your system is setup to restart immediately on those events. Go in to computer management (right-click my computer and select manage) and check your system event logs. Look for red circles with white X's in the center specifically the ones labeled System Error under the "Source" column. Google the BCC or error code you get, if you get one. It could be a lot of things, system conflicts, bad RAM, bad caps on your motherboard or video card, overheating CPU... a lot of things.

I think I may have figured it out. I did a system restore to a date before my problem began. Vegas worked fine. I noticed that between the date I restored and the day of the problems, a "Windows media player runtime update" was installed. I think that was it.... Damn Bill Gates. Man it's freakin scary when you can't even open a .veg file. Like I said, Vegas has always been rock solid for me. I hate upgrades, updates, etc. I want to get Vegas 6.0, but it sounds like there are some gremlins in there to be worked out. Maybe I'll buy at the intro price, and let it sit till 6.0b.
